Will they spin this successfully enough for Bush to survive?
Will the "Republican Noise Machine", which is already moving into high gear be able to spin this well enough for the Administration to survive? I know there are a lot of people on both sides of the aisle pissed, but when it comes down to it, will career Republican politicians be able to finally put their country before their party and will Bush's core supporters come to the conclusion that being "protected" from gay marriage isn't worth an American Holocaust?

1. Short answer: NO.
Check out these two threads, and they're only the beginning on the major networks.

They are not going to be able to lie their way out of this one. NO MORE. THIS IS THE TURNING POINT.

2. Most of his supporters are racist scumbags who have no problem
with this. We should reward the media (Geraldo, Anderson Cooper, and the others who are speaking the truth) and keep asking the question why is the US Government committing genocide after telling us Saddam HAD to be removed from power for the same thing. Bush and his followers might not have caused the hurricane, but they sure as hell are committing genocide by trapping those people in NO (especially that convention center). That's just plain wrong. I'm with Geraldo on this one. It's absolutely perposterous.

4. Not a chance in hell.
Even the traditionally conservative media sees this for what it is: atrocious.

Or, to quote Jack Cafferty, embarassing.

5. The republicans are on C-Span right now, trying to spin it.
Going on about how much people in their respective states care. Yeah, yeah, but do they themselves care? No accountability with them, ever.

And here's why.

They will use this event to say that the tax cuts should increase and be permanent.

They will say that we need to cut business taxes as an incentive to build in that area when it's cleared.

There will be an event or two within 1 week to distract.

Football season starts next week.

There will probably be a media blackout in the area.

Somehow they will use this event, with very careful wording and repetitiveness, to convince people that the estate tax is holding back donations or something. This will conveniently leave out that this only affects people who are acquiring 1.5 million dollars in assets or more. Under that, no tax. (as I understand it)

These are the non-conspiracy answers.

I have some wild ones, but when I post them, the whole thread disappears. :-(

Edit: SOMEBODY here has a grammar problem at 2:00 am.

14. NO. The country is going to come together. Most people are of good
heart and will not tolerate murder if they know of it. The truth is coming through the fog already.

We are all AMERICANS. More people all the time are seeing through the self-serving, murderous, ruinous lies at last. It's time for an unstoppable nonviolent movement to bring healing and regime change. We cannot tolerate less.

The suffering and dying in the stricken areas must stop NOW. Did you know that the Red Cross STILL isn't being allowed into New Orleans by the National Guard?

Heroes are appearing, and they are getting the media attention that would have been impossible not long ago because of the press control by the White House. This story was on FOX!!!

We must look to the right examples and move forward. The Bush Administration's ability to lie themselves out of accountability is not going to work so well any more.

17. Obviously I hope you're right.
But everything else that's happened in this administration, as well as the previous several, show that no amount of cynicism is enough.

18. Actually, I think we are at the turning point now. The murderous
crimes and lies have reached such a crescendo that even the Poodle Press is starting to rebel. Bush's numbers are continuing to plummet, and that was BEFORE the hurricane.

There is a limit, and the country's citizens has reached it at last.

as we type. This, I am almost totally sure of.

9. No
I have NEVER seen people so united in one belief: that this is a huge clusterfuck, caused by the administration.

EVERYBODY I talk to is absolutely outraged, and their anger is all directed at Bush, Chertoff and Brown.

11. Same here
Everyone I know, both Republican and everyone else, is seething with anger over this ~ no decent person could have watched this and ever forget it. All I heard all week was 'what has happened to this country?' If they were Republicans, I was happy to tell them. No one disagreed.

He will be characterized in history by the horrific images of Abu Ghraib and of New Orleans. That is his legacy and it will not be erased by dumb, inane and insulting photo ops. Those days are over ~

I am convinced he is a sadist, along with Rummy, Cheney and the rest of his band of crooks and looters. Evil is too good a word for them, and for those who continue to support him, if anyone other than Freepers are left of his base.

He must step down before this country can begin to recover from his evil influence. What we saw this week, was pure evil, deliberate and deadly neglect. He CANNOT remain in control of the lives of so many people.

20. That's the key - most people are "decent," GOP and Dems. (I am
talking about regular people, not the mostly corrupt lot in Congress.) The Bush Administration was already in trouble, and now they have done something so monstrous, so inhuman, so utterly EVIL and callous, NO ONE can misunderstand.

Only the corrupt and the insane will continue to support the Bush Administration. Most people are neither.

And oh, are they going to be mad when they begin to realize the extent to which they've been played for fools while their country was looted - yes, the REAL looters - and their young people killed and the US made a pariah all over the world. The light is beginning to dawn on these people.

12. not this time
By the time Faux reporters (smith/geraldo) are abandoning the party line to report the truth about the scope of the horrors in NO and, by extension, the absolute incompetence and culpability of bush appointees in FEMA/HS, this ship is already on its way down.

On edit; hmmmm...ambiguous wording makes it sound like I'm blaming you for the hurricane. :eyes: Actually, I was referring to the throwing of levity. :D

I spent about an hour arguing with someone about it yesterday. The guy said he couldn't believe people were trying to blame the President, when it was the local leaders who were at fault here. So that is how I learned what the Rush Limbaugh show must be saying.
