Dark thoughts in the middle of the night...

I was reading through the day's posts and links and got thinking about how extended are our country's resources (military, first responders, emergency equipment, relief organizations and supplies), thanks to *'s wars and the Katrina disaster. Then I remembered something I read about terrorists' obsession with anniversary dates, and the thought occurred that September 11th is only 8 days away.

Given DHS's underwhelming response to a catastrophe which was predicted at least four days before it happened, I am concerned about the consequences of a sudden attack equal in magnitude to 9-11. Do we have the resources to rise to the challenge? In the end, I know the American people will come through, and maybe they'll even tell FEMA to get the hell out of the way of those who want to provide real assistance to the victims, including members of the international community.

My main concern is how * would attempt to use such an event to increase his power, and what the public's response would be.

One thing's for sure: * would have to come up with a new slogan to replace "We're fighting 'em there so we won't have to fight 'em here" (which makes absolutely no sense, given the nature of the enemy).

2. I'd worry first about a second major hurricane hitting again

I think such an attack following on the heels of this debacle would considerably DECREASE his power.

There are already enough opinion articles from die-hard Duh-bya supporters clearly stating what a fuck-up he and his admin is.

If he TRIES to consolidate power in such a situation, he will be skewered from all directions. Impeachment will be a definite possibility.

But G*d help us all if such a scenario should play out.

4. I don't know, he's been pretty effective so far

at consolodating his power. He definitely has the most power given to him of any President, and we have the least rights. Maybe Lincoln would be a close second. Hard to decide who would be number one. My vote's for Bush though. So I have no doubts he would try and probably succeed in maintaining his power. Or increasing it.

Has been running through my head for days now.
We've seen hurricane relief get in quickly time and time again.
We drop food and water from the air around the world.
