2004 National Geographic: What would happen IF NOLA was hit
Here's a sniP:
Thousands drowned in the murky brew that was soon contaminated by sewage and industrial waste. Thousands more who survived the flood later perished from dehydration and disease as they waited to be rescued. It took two months to pump the city dry, and by then the Big Easy was buried under a blanket of putrid sediment, a million people were homeless, and 50,000 were dead. It was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States.

When did this calamity happen? It hasn't—yet. But the doomsday scenario is not far-fetched. The Federal Emergency Management Agency lists a hurricane strike on New Orleans as one of the most dire threats to the nation, up there with a large earthquake in California or a terrorist attack on New York City. Even the Red Cross no longer opens hurricane shelters in the city, claiming the risk to its workers is too great.

17. Yes. It has been predicted since the mid 80's, at least.
Sometime in the mid 80's I saw the results of a Cray simulation of a major hurricane hit on N.O., and the results closely matched what has happened.

Before that, in the 70's I lived in N.O., and we all knew, without studies, that if a hurricane caused the leeves to break, that we would all be in the shit.

This has been predicted for over 30 years.

4. For those in charge of Disasters, this shoulda coulda been part of their
Mandatory reading/research/review.

That the actual result of a hurricane hit looked anything but coordinated/organized...we wonder if the report was missed...

Musta been missed or ignored.... too bad, lotta lives were lost

13. For sure there's plenty of blame to go around
and Bush and the Governors should get their fair share.

The mayor and state officals are the ones responsible to be prepared for this type of emergency. Where were the supplies, shelter, logisitcs BEFORE Katrina hit? There were well aware of the nightmare senario potentially unfolding. The city had days to prepare for the worse case senario. It is obvious he did far too little to prepare his city for a disaster.

8. I saw a PBS show on weather a couple of years ago.
Noone could have predicted any of this is you're an inept GOP appointee on the golf course...

a hurricane destroying New Orleans
the need for immediate response
the effect of sending the National Guard to another continent
an attack on US soil
the use of a jet as a missile
resistance to US military occupation
selecting a president because you'd enjoy having a beer with him
the repercussions of hiring inept cronies

But somehow some of us predicted all this. And we take no pleasure in saying, 'Told you so.'

9. This hurricane season was said to be one of the worst.
The conditions in the south were known.

You're right, we take no pleasure in saying "told you so". I find it's fucking pathetic that it took something like this to happen.

12. This may go down
as one of the biggest follies in this country's history.

I do believe a lot of blame falls on the govt of Louisiana, but the majority goes to the feds....FEMA should have had a plan in place for this and the NG should have been mobilized last Friday.

Didn't Bush say yesterday that the feds were to blame or something to that effect in one of his phot-op speeches?

I ask this because I was listening to Hannity briefly yesterday, and he was ripping the mayor of NOLA a new one regarding the mayor's statements asking where the fuck the feds were...the irony is that THE HEAD OF THE FEDS, HANNITY'S EMPEROR, ACCEPTED THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS AND HANNITY WAS STILL BLAMING THE MAYOR....what a douchebag.

18. Clinton is trying to cover his own ass too.
This has been predicted since the 70's that I know of. He didn't do anything either. Plenty of blame for everyone on this massive screw-up.
