Democrat Senators to investigate hurricane response
Mind you this was in my Wilmington Newspaper so it sounds like it's Tom Carper doing all the work but I'm assuming his just a part of the probe group - hopefully it's all good!

Carper wants probe on reaction
Senator: 'We need to get this right'
BY RANDALL CHASE / Associated Press
09/03/2005

DOVER -- U.S. Sen. Tom Carper joined other Democratic lawmakers Friday in calling for an investigation into the federal government's response to Hurricane Katrina.

"It's difficult to understand how, four years after Sept. 11 and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, the federal government appears to have been unprepared for a catastrophe of this magnitude," said Carper, a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Department of Homeland Security, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Coast Guard.

Carper, D-Del., said in a statement that the initial focus of the investigation will be to determine if everything is being done to help the hurricane victims, followed by oversight hearings on the government's response.

4. Susan Collins is involved, too
(I still can't stand her and I'm sure she'll whitewash this.)

"Collins to lead probe of response"
...

In that vein, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., asked Collins to review the response of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which typically arranges for food and housing. He called the disaster "almost incomprehensible" and "heartbreaking," but said hearings should be held to explore lessons about how to respond to future emergencies.

Collins is chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, and FEMA was moved to the Department of Homeland Security when agencies were consolidated.

Her committee will begin by investigating whether FEMA needs legislation to better provide relief. A committee briefing for lawmakers from the affected states is scheduled Wednesday. Hearings could follow later in the month.
