Right wing using September 11th... again.
In the ongoing Hurricane Katrine relief efforts, there seems to be this sentiment among the right that September 11th and New York City was the model for efficiency during a major disaster. They are merely doing this in an effort to prop up the likes of Giuliani, Pataki and discredit Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco. Well, it was nearly a week ago that Ann Coulter stated that residents of New York City "would immediately surrender" if terrorists invaded their city.

Let me get this straight. The 9/11 evacuation and response was good and efficient because of Republican leadership. Hurricane Katrina response was horrible because of Democratic leadership. In both cases, the victims are completely shit upon by the right. I should also point out that the populations of New York and New Orleans are mostly Democrat. 9/11: New york residents are cowards. Katrina: New Orleans residents are mostly lawless welfare recipients who were too stupid to help themselves.

Look at this America! This is how the Republican party treats people who have been affected by horrendous disasters. Look at these vile republicans, these are their true colors. I am disgusted with the entire lot of Republicans in this country. They are nothing but filth and so is their leadership.

3. yeah a great job on Sept 11
Weren't the people in the second tower told it was safe to go back to work after the first tower was hit? Yeah that's a grrreat job of leadership. (much sarcasm here)

5. Let them. It's not working.
And let's see how the 9/11 DC extravaganza is going to be presented now. They will probably change it to a relief effort of some kind but it's still a very sensitive issue.

7. NOMINATED -- Excellent point
I saw Bernie K-whatever his last name is, the one who was nominated for DHS and then had to step back because of all the not-quite-dead skeletons in HIS closet. He was insufferable, doing just what you said, suggesting that things went so much better after 9-11.

"Didn't they have a plan?" he wanted to know. Uh, yeah. You just didn't get a copy of it you idjit. And much more. He was horrible.

What they're missing in their little analogy is stuff like this:

* NYC didn't lose all electricity.
* The disaster was confined to a small area, not the whole REGION (a region in fact probably nearly the size of the whole state)
* It wasn't flooded, which means that transportation worked.
* They didn't have FEMA sending help AWAY!!!!! (See this thread for a number of instances: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4588088&mesg_id=4588088 )
* There WEREN'T any people who needed rescuing, let alone millions over that huge REGION.
* Only 3 buildings were destroyed, not most of the entire infrastructure in the whole city.
* NYC had water to help put out the fires; there's nothing availble just yet to eradicate the floodwater.
* Many, many, many more people killed, with bodies spread out over that whole REGION.

And so forth. I'm sure there are other differences I'm not thinking of.
