Conservation needed to keep PM's promise to provide more energy to U.S.

SASKATOON (CP) - Prime Minister Paul Martin promised Friday that Canada will provide more energy to the U.S. in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, but with oil production already flat-out, Canadians will have to use less fuel to create the extra supply.

It's estimated Katrina shut down 90 per cent of production facilities in the area.

Canada's share of the voluntary commitment is 91,000 barrels of oil per day.

Ottawa believes Canada will be able to increase the flow of oil and refined products to the United States mainly because higher gasoline prices will encourage less consumption.

"As a major energy producer, Canada has the ability, and the obligation, to be a part of this important effort," Natural Resources Minister John Efford said in a release.

9. It is not only Canada, 26 countries are working on this and it has

more to do with keeping your economy from failing which will affect many other countries. In a way, it seems, it can be looked at as 'self interest' as well.

Imagine no one able to drive including trucks transporting food, etc, many not able to get to work because, even those cities that have public transportation are not set up to transport all, it would be an economic disaster.

There isn't a lot being said about this because it will cause further panic but it is essential that relief be provided in the interim, imo.
