Is there housing sitting empty on closed military bases?
There have been a lot of base closings around here. Is all that housing sitting empty and waiting to house hurricane refugees?

5. Probably so,
but it is the first thing I thought of, and I am a civilian.

3. The Badger Army Ammunition plant in Baraboo, WI is vacant,
huge and empty. I have no idea what kind of shape it is in.

4. My sister and her family lived in Army housing at the Seneca depot .
That base was closed, but if the housing is still empty it would be a real step up from the Superdome.

6. My sister asked
me last night about the ranch in Crawford. She said since * isn't using it, why couldn't they use that land as at least a temporary place while they figure out where people are going. And he spent all that time clearing brush. :eyes: Think he'd offer up his own place? :grr:

7. Sure there is.
However, a lot of local governments don't want the social services and local government burden that comes with opening those up to refugees. Local schools' budgets may be overwhelmed with new kids entering into the district, and Section 8 housing programs will be exhausted.

Additionally, there are some of those places that are not compliant with building codes of today and there is a fear of opening them up. To cite one example, here locally, we have a closed AFB (Chanute) that has a vacant hospital facility as well as multiple dorms that are empty. They all have some form of asbestos insulation or lead based paint in them...

I'm not saying it is RIGHT, but that is how it is.
