Red Cross is important, but don't forget about Habitat for Humanity!
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 10:39 AM by KzooDem
Of course, the Red Cross needs donations to help with the needs of victims. There are some things, however, that the Red Cross is not specialized to do, which is quickly and effectively construct new, affordable housing.

Habitat for Humanity is leading an effort to address the short and longer-term housing needs for the hundreds and thousands who will need places to call home for a while.

ON EDIT: I was just on my way back to make the very point made by SouthernDem below.

I didn't mean to suggest that we should donate to HFH instead of RC. The RC needs to support the immediate needs of these people and they can't do it without our help.

Please, do, however consider a donation of money or time to this important organization when we know the drastic immediate needs of our fellow citizens have been met by the RC.

1. I respectfully disagree.
Rebuilding houses is far from a priority at this time. Also, there just are not that many Habitat homes to require large amounts of money like the Red Cross needs. The Red Cross is feeding and clothing everyone. This is what is need right now. Save donating to HH for a month or so and give to the Red Cross.

6. True, BUT we will be in rescue and aid mode for atleast a month.
Pictures on TV do not do the amount of damage justice. No one will be rebuilding for a long time. Our low income area is known as East Biloxi or The Point. It is basicly no longer there. It is just one big mass of rubble. No one will be able to rebuild there for a while.

Also, FEMA will assist rebuilding houses. I have nothing but respect for HH but they should not be taking donations now. Sorry but the money is needed elsewhere.

7. Rescue and aid will last atleast a month. The low income area of
Biloxi is no more. It is just a pile of rubble. There is no where to rebuild for now.

Red Cross feeds and cloths. They need money now. FEMA will pay to rebuild homes later.
