shoot to kill order for strays -- first person account on other aspects
i have italian greyhounds and belong to a wonderful listserv of iggie owners and breeders. "dog people" are a special lot. i know to a casual dog owner, and most people in general, you can't imagine the disturbance this order is causing. people are dying. people are being shot. to "dog people," shoot to kill orders for strays is like shoot to kill orders for orphaned children.

with that background, i received this alert this morning. please try to understand where dog people "come from" emotionally and spiritually. this isn't to discount the dying people at all. myself and my husband discussed this last night and we are going to open our house to orphaned pets. we a long way away from NOLA, but already there are pretty major situations arising with people who STAYED BEHIND to take care of a pet. if i can help anyone keep a loved pet, or reunite, or whatever -- it's what we can do and something we do well.

anyhow, it's my small, thing. here's the alert:

FWD: URGENT Info from New Orleans

I will write a more detailed post tomorrow, actually today, but my
husband finally reached me. He is safe, well protected by our Police
force when they are fighting the fires, but I need to get this out
ASAP.

What he told me is so disturbing and urgent, if there is anyone out
there with the power to do something quickly, this has to get out.
I do have more inside info but I'm too drained to write more.
My husband said that a shoot to kill order with regards to animals
may begin soon. They believe it is the most humane way to handle
the multitude of animals that are starving and ill, or injured.
I cannot fathom this, and I can't bear to think that someone's family
pet will end like this. Please, please, please try to get this order
rescinded. I don't know who it came from. But someone will know
the right person to contact. Let them begin on the Westbank, it
isn't flooded, and there are secure back highways to come in. The
rescues are just waiting for the word to go, and the military is
coming in, and they will take care of the criminals that have better
weapons than our own police force.

I will post more, later after I've rested. Permission to crosspost.
I stand behind the validity of this information.

1. My heart breaks for the animals...
There are some organizations who are helping. Even though I have furry 4 footed babies that are my children, I gotta say this might be far more humane than letting the starve to death or become disease ridden or god forbid start foraging for food around the dead bodies of human beings.

It's heartbreaking all the way around...

kynd -- my heart is so broken i can't even get mad anymore. i just don't even have words anymore.

16. I'm proud to say that Charlotte, NC is taking in
about 200 fellow Americans and housing them in the old Charlotte Coliseum(use to the be the home of the Charlotte Hornets b4 their move to NO--ironic huh!?)and if any of them have pets when they arrive the local animal shelter will be housing their pets for 2wks and then if they are still here for another 4wks for a small fee.

I was so glad to hear this because I can't image leaving my boy Sheridan behind to face this.

7. and even more: supply requests -- PLEASE X-POST
Subject: Supply request from Noah's Wish/PLEASE CROSS POST

Hello
Thanks so much for your offer and I'm sorry it has taken so
long
to get back with you. We are operating in Slidell, Louisiana. Additional
teams are being dispatched. Further sites of operation are anticipated.
Communications are poor at best.

Right now, I can tell you that we can certainly use monetary
donations which can be sent to the main office at PO Box 997,
Placerville,
CA 95667.

Also, we always have a need and use for gift cards from the
major
national chains such as Walmart, Petsmart, Lowes, Petco, etc. The gift
cards are used for the purchase of supplies and equipment as needed and
they
are provided for our field teams to enable them to make emergency "we
need
this RIGHT NOW" items for care of the animals.

We also have an ongoing need for any of the following items:
batteries, bolt cutters, cable/electrician's ties, break-away cat
collars,
dog collars, clamps, clip boards, spring clamps (extra large size),
Rewritable CD's, flash or jump drives, collapsible wire cages, new dog
leashes and collars (we stress "new" because of concerns of cross
contamination from animal to animal), duct tape, disposable ear plugs,
heavy
duty extension cords, grooming clippers, FRS radios, hand sanitizing
gel,
heating pads, various office supplies, Polaroid 600 cameras and film,
black
and red Sharpie pens, staplers and staples (not the office type - the
type
you find in the tool section of the stores), surgical and exam gloves,
gallon and larger size ziplock bags. There is no need to be concerned
about
food supplies as this is taken care of by the generosity of the pet food
companies. If this need changes, I will post an alert.

If your budget permits purchase of larger ticket items we
will
have the need for animal containment, rescue, and control equipment that
we
usually purchase through ACES (www.animal-care.com). This equipment can
be
purchased on line or over the phone by credit card and shipped to the
address I will provide below. If you are interested in purchasing one of
these items, please e-mail me first and I can let you know what we
specifically are looking for, but for pricing considerations we will be
looking at purchasing live-traps, Evac-Sacs, catch-poles, animal
graspers,
cat tongs, nets, and the specially handling gloves.

11. I've found one good story if that will help just a little
http://www.texarkanagazette.com/articles/2005/09/02/loc...

For those who cannot afford to stay in a motel, the Texarkana Humane Society, Texarkana Animal Shelter and the Texarkana Office of Emergency Management are setting up an animal shelter on the grounds of the Southwest Center.

This way, evacuees staying at the shelter can have their pets close by.

"We don't want them stressed out even more by not being able to have their animals with them," said Lori Anderson, public relations director for the humane society.

Shelters expect 'glut' of furry evacuees

The SPCA here is already housing hundreds of pets left homeless in Katrina's wake

When the golden retriever mix named Precious arrived at the Astrodome on Friday with her New Orleans owner, the 5-year-old dog promptly joined hundreds of other hurricane-weary pets at a Houston animal shelter.

The dog, who rode to Houston on a bus with her owner after the two swam, on and off, for two days to escape their flooded home, wasn't allowed into the landmark arena.

But workers with the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were on hand to offer Precious and other homeless pets shelter at their crowded facility at 900 Portway Drive.

"The woman was so happy that she was able to find a place to take care of her baby while she took care of herself," said SPCA spokeswoman Alice Sarmiento. "These are people who love their pets so much they risked life and limb to get them here."

17. this is the story that i most relate to:
another story from the italian greyhound list:

___________________________

last night on our local ABC affliate newscast was a refined looking woman by the name of Debbie Miller holding two igs (italian greyhounds). She was a victim of Katrina and was from Metairie, Louisiana. She was sleeping in her car and some thugs came in the middle of the night and stole it from her along with her purse, id, money and everything she had left. She only has the clothes on her back and her two igs. Isabella and don't remember the male's name. She said she didn't know what she was going to do as she had nothing. No money, no id, no where to go. Not even leads for the iggies. She obviously loved her iggies very much and had no intention of giving them up.

Anyway, for someone that might me able to help the news station said she was going to San Antonio, Houston or Dallas. I know they won't let her dogs on the bus so I don't know if she will get there or not. Someone that could go down to the relief centers in those areas can post on the message boards. At least, that is what they tell me. I know of two ig people in the Fort Worth area that said they would house her and her dogs if anyone can find them. I felt so sorry for this woman. She seemed to be a responsible law abiding citizen and had been doubly victimized.
Maybe someone can find her and help her.

_____________________________

this woman has NOT been found yet and there's a multitude of iggie people who would love to take her in. i can totally relate. i would not have let go of my iggies. no one would.
