4. Like volunteering for the TANG so you don't have to go to Vietnam?
Bush's "fetish" for volunteerism basically means he doesn't think the government should have to do anything to help people; all aid for the poor, for natural disasters, etc. should be volunteered by private citizens. And if they don't help, well, too bad.

11. The problem with that line of thought is
people are going to run out of money to donate! After the mortgage, utility bills, food, clothing, medical insurance (if they're lucky enough to be able to afford insurance), doctor bills, real estate taxes and buying $3-4-5.00 a gallon in gas for the car....there is no money left to donate! Oh well? I don't think the GOP will survive that kind of attitude.

What a fucking FOOL!

Even if they want to donate, people can give only so much. Also - there was a recent study by some charity or university (will try to locate it) that suggested that the richer people are, the LESS likely they are to donate to charities (obviously this isn't true of all of them). I remember they interviewed one guy who said he paid so much in taxes he didn't feel obligated to give more to charity. The other problem with relying on private donations is that when there's a very large disaster like this, there won't be any central coordinating entity to distribute the donations efficiently to the people who need them the most. The Red Cross is the closest thing we have to a big disaster relief charity, but it seems that even they havn't been able to get the aid to the people. Government is the only entity that has both the resources and the authority to handle disaster relief effectively. Problem is, this time the people who were supposed to be in charge -- starting with Bush -- didn't do their jobs. FEMA had insufficient funding and is headed by an idiot. And Bush doesn't really care.

6. Well, I see what he's saying.
The president is VERY big on people giving to charities and volunteering rather than government doing it.

Not that BUSH has himself actually volunteered for anything! But his attitude is, "well, YOU care so much about poor folks why don't YOU do something?"

8. He means Bush is all for other people volunteering to help to fix
what he has fucked over. If people are so moved that they want to personally try to make up for what he has plundered from social programs, infrastructure spending, emergency relief preparedness spending--then he is all for that.

9. Then let Canada volunteer like they want to.
I just finished reading another thread that said FEMA was not allowing Floridians volunteer the use of their air boats because they weren't official contractors.

I don't see a fetish for volunteerism when people aren't allowed to get in and help.
