NO's stray pets may be in danger soon...please help!
I just read this thread, and it broke my heart....

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4608548

I realize that these pets are starving, and may end up doing what we don't want to think about; or they could begin spreading disease.

Please find a pet rescue group to donate to so we can get some of these poor creatures out of NOLA.

Here's a good one: www.noahswish.org
FSC

PS- I'm not discounting the human suffering at all, and am doing plenty to try to help folks who have come to Dallas. PLEASE don't jump on me for this.

46. Disagree! Don't help animals at all & the public health emergency worsens
because of dead animal remains floating in the water and decomposing in the streets, which leads to diseases like cholera, and those diseases kill people.

Yes, short-term priorities are obviously crucial with precious scarce resources for people, but let's not be too shortsighted about making the crisis more lethal several days from now!

59. WTF is your problem? They can't wait no more than people
can wait. The pets need food and water, and unlike people, they are not accepted in shelters. If you don't want to help, nobody can make you, but it's stupid of you to advice to others not to help.

3. I am a volunteer for a pet rescue group. I don't think there's much
we can do right now. The NG nor the police will let anyone into NO or most of the other storm ravaged areas, for safety reasons.

I also heard this on CNN, and I am typing this through my tears.

It is more important to get food and water to the humans FIRST, but I'd do anything to make sure those little lost dogs were a close second!

Unfortunately, I can't see how we can do that right now.

I would really like to adopt a NO animal. Must I go to LA to adopt one?

14. ANIMALS NEED HELP NOW!!!
People are finally getting the help they need, money is flooding in for them.

The animals MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN.

Anyone who has had a best friend who is a canine, or a cat that helped them get through the worst time of their life KNOW how important they are. Rescue groups are inside NO trying to get animals out. LA-SPCA is taking calls from pet owners who want them to break into their homes to rescue their pets. Another group (maybe they've merged with the SPCA by now) is inside NO working on this right now. THEY NEED OUR HELP!!!

Please donate to rescue the pets. Please help our furry friends who have brought us so much joy and comfort.

From http://www.nola.com/newslogs/breakingtp/index.ssf?/mtlo...

SPCA help for animals
Friday, 9:50 p.m.

There's hope for stranded pets in the New Orleans area. The Louisiana SPCA, New Orleans' animal control agency, has begun rescuing pets from owners houses.

Louisiana SPCA director Laura Maloney said shelter workers follow other agencies and crews through neighborhoods and rescue pets, some that are locked in houses. At the owners' request, "we break in," she said.

Owners have to call or email the operation and give their name and address and information about where the pet is confined.

The hotline number is: 1-225-578-6111. E-mail should be sent to Katrinaanimalrescue@yahoo.com .

The hotline already is in effect, Maloney said. "It's busy an awful lot. We are trying to get a bank of telephones"

17. Donated yesterday...thanks for posting this, FSC!
Noahs' Wish sounds like a great group, as their whole organization is dedicated strictly to rescuing animals in situations like this. So they really know their stuff. I just hope they are able to get in there and do their stuff soon.

p.s. To those who have said people must be the priority as far as aid and donations go:
I donated both to Noah's Wish AND to relief efforts that will help PEOPLE as well. So just because we are donating to help animals, this doesn't necessarily take away from helping the people. Both the people and animals need our help, so if it is financially possible for individuals to donate to both types of organizations, then I see that as a great thing. I personally would hope I could help in some small way to ease the suffering of both humans and animals in this devastating situation.

Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief

PETCO and the PETCO Foundation are making a difference for animals affected by the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. When Hurricane Katrina first made landfall on the Gulf Coast, PETCO and the PETCO Foundation discussed plans with American Humane's Animal Emergency Services to deploy its rescue rig to responders ready to be staged in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

With monetary assistance from the PETCO Foundation, the American Humane's rescue rig was deployed on August 31st, and after a quick stop at a local PETCO for food and supplies, it was on its way. The truck is outfitted to enable responders to carry out emergency procedures under the most challenging disaster conditions. The group will join Animal Emergency Services veterans and volunteers, many who have recently attended training sessions in Englewood, CO and Atlanta, GA sponsored by the PETCO Foundation. Visit American Humane’s web site to see how they are responding to the disaster.

PETCO and the PETCO Foundation responded within hours of Hurricane Katrina's first touching land. A company-wide Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief fundraiser is providing much needed food, product and monetary donations to the affected animals and the people who love them. All funds donated will go to alleviating the many challenges these animals and their guardians in the Gulf Coast states will continue to face.

During an emergency "Round Up" fundraiser now through September 11, 2005, PETCO is collecting donations online and in stores nationwide. Each time you make a purchase at a PETCO store, we'll ask you to Round Up your purchase to the next highest dollar - and we will donate that difference to the PETCO Foundation.

http://www.petco.com/Content/Content.aspx?PC=disasterrelief&Nav=158&cm_re=090105-_-hp3-_-hurricane

The Round Up fundraiser may be extended depending on the need and the amount raised. The PETCO Foundation has already provided more than $100,000 worth of assistance to animal welfare agencies in the wake of last year's hurricanes. The PETCO Foundation assists with Disaster Response teams from the Humane Society of the United States and the American Humane Association to address the critical animal needs created by the recent weather events.

41. Human Life IS important and animals are an
important part of that life too! In fact many humans don't evacuate during serious hurricanes because they don't want to leave their pets behind.

I hope nobody jumps on you fudge

Here's an update from UAN:

http://www.uan.org/ears/action_report.html

EARS is working with the Houston SPCA to establish an emergency animal shelter for the hundreds, and possibly thousands, of animals who are being brought to that facility from evacuated areas of Louisiana. Ten highly skilled EARS volunteers from Northern California are on their way toting supplies from headquarters to Houston to help set up and operate the shelter with local EARS volunteers. We have activiated all Texas-based EARS volunteers who are able to respond to the Houston sheltering effort. All other volunteers are asked to wait for activation before responding.

Another group of EARS volunteers is now staging in Jackson, MS but is prepared to assist where needed.

UAN is coordinating response efforts with several other organizations that are providing animal disaster relief - including the ASPCA, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Colorado-based Code 3 Associates, the Humane Society of the United States, American Humane and Best Friends Animal Society.

UAN has alerted all of our 2,300 trained EARS volunteers that we may need their help, and already more than 1,500 people are willing and able to respond when EARS is deployed. We will be notifying volunteers about activiation as our needs become more clear. It is still very early in this effort.

Please keep checking this Action Report for more details. If you are an EARS volunteer and have not yet informed us of your availability and skills, please do so now by clicking the appropriate link below in the "Contacts" section. We will be using information gathered through this process to mobilize volunteers.

SHELTER INFORMATION:
We are maintaining a downloadable/printable list of all temporary animal shelters that we hear about in the affected areas. If you become aware of any shelters that are accepting animals, please forward the information to info@uan.org. Download the current information .

REPORTING LOST ANIMALS:
We are collecting rescue requests from evacuees and others who are unsure of the whereabouts of their animals. Those requests are daily being compiled with requests reported to other organizations with whom we are coordinating to form a master database. Once teams are deployed, these requests will be forwarded to those in the area who can perform rescue efforts. If you need to report a lost animal, please send your name, number, e-mail, the # and species of animal, location of animal (address plus directions and landmarks), and permission to enter to headquarters@ears.org. Alternatively, you can call one of these two hotlines: 866-275-3923 x 4700 (ASPCA) or 1-800-HUMANE1 (HSUS).

PET LOSS SUPPORT HOTLINE:
We know that so many people are struggling to cope with the unknown status of their animals and ultimately mourning their deaths. If you or someone you know need to talk with someone, please call the Pet Loss Support Hotline run by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The toll-free number is (800) 565-1526 and there are people to answer the line everyday from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm PST. The school has added weekend shifts and will secure extra help over the next few weeks to staff the hotline, who will be instructed on dealing with victims of disasters. Another good pet loss support resource is the pet bereavement forum at iVillage.

I'm going to start a new thread for this in GD. I know many DUers are very concerned about the pets, farm animals and wildlife too!

67. OK, I sent some money to Noah's Wish.
After thinking about how I'd feel if someone asked me to leave Gabby behind, I got all teary-eyed. :(

72. I won't jump on you. I like you. And I like animals.
But I'm sorry, I simply can't see diverting ANY resources to saving animals until every person is out of danger.

People have to be the priority.
