United Animal Nations Update:
I hope I'm not the only one thinking about the animals ! Many humans don't evacuate disaster areas because they don't want to leave their pets behind.
=========

http://www.uan.org/ears/action_report.html

EARS is working with the Houston SPCA to establish an emergency animal shelter for the hundreds, and possibly thousands, of animals who are being brought to that facility from evacuated areas of Louisiana. Ten highly skilled EARS volunteers from Northern California are on their way toting supplies from headquarters to Houston to help set up and operate the shelter with local EARS volunteers. We have activiated all Texas-based EARS volunteers who are able to respond to the Houston sheltering effort. All other volunteers are asked to wait for activation before responding.

Another group of EARS volunteers is now staging in Jackson, MS but is prepared to assist where needed.

UAN is coordinating response efforts with several other organizations that are providing animal disaster relief - including the ASPCA, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Colorado-based Code 3 Associates, the Humane Society of the United States, American Humane and Best Friends Animal Society.

UAN has alerted all of our 2,300 trained EARS volunteers that we may need their help, and already more than 1,500 people are willing and able to respond when EARS is deployed. We will be notifying volunteers about activiation as our needs become more clear. It is still very early in this effort.

Please keep checking this Action Report for more details. If you are an EARS volunteer and have not yet informed us of your availability and skills, please do so now by clicking the appropriate link below in the "Contacts" section. We will be using information gathered through this process to mobilize volunteers.

SHELTER INFORMATION:
We are maintaining a downloadable/printable list of all temporary animal shelters that we hear about in the affected areas. If you become aware of any shelters that are accepting animals, please forward the information to info@uan.org . Download the current information .

REPORTING LOST ANIMALS:
We are collecting rescue requests from evacuees and others who are unsure of the whereabouts of their animals. Those requests are daily being compiled with requests reported to other organizations with whom we are coordinating to form a master database. Once teams are deployed, these requests will be forwarded to those in the area who can perform rescue efforts. If you need to report a lost animal, please send your name, number, e-mail, the # and species of animal, location of animal (address plus directions and landmarks), and permission to enter to headquarters@ears.org . Alternatively, you can call one of these two hotlines: 866-275-3923 x 4700 (ASPCA) or 1-800-HUMANE1 (HSUS).

PET LOSS SUPPORT HOTLINE:
We know that so many people are struggling to cope with the unknown status of their animals and ultimately mourning their deaths. If you or someone you know need to talk with someone, please call the Pet Loss Support Hotline run by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The toll-free number is (800) 565-1526 and there are people to answer the line everyday from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm PST. The school has added weekend shifts and will secure extra help over the next few weeks to staff the hotline, who will be instructed on dealing with victims of disasters. Another good pet loss support resource is the pet bereavement forum at iVillage.

1. I am! I am!
My heart breaks thinking about the poor dogs and cats, whose beloved owners couldn't bring them along. I honestly feel better for the ones that perished immediately. I hope at least some of them are able to find homes, but sadly I think a lot of them are going to be destroyed.

3. I live in a hurricane prone area
and evacuation is never an option because of our pets! Here's a good website I keep handy, just in case we ever stare into the barrel of a Cat 4-5: http://petswelcome.com/

Also, from the FEMA library:

4. We are also responsible for the animals,
Surely there must be organizations such SPCA to receive donations. Anyone know if there are any fund raising campaigns going on? How about donations of food from the likes of PetCo, Petsmart and other pet supply stores. Don't forget that all creatures are citizens of the world, not just people.

8. Volunteer Link:
http://ga4.org/uan/events/ears_katrina_convergent/details.tcl

Also, DU Admin's Hurricane Disaster Relief Info and Resources above, have links to many other animal organizations addressing the animals' needs and what you can do/donate!

In my experiences, the major pet store chains/food/pharmas donate quite generously to these causes.

I have no doubt they're coming through for Katrina's victims, great and small too

5. It must be so hard on the people who have lost so much to loose their dear
animal friends too. I would be beyond consolation.

7. And why it's hard to get people to evacuate....
This will come to serious awareness when they start recovering the bodies of human and animal remains in those devastatingly flooded homes :(
