FEAR
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 04:09 PM by kineta
With an administration that seems hellbent on keeping our nation in a state of fear, Franklin Roosevelt's inagural speech is worth reading:

http://www.bartleby.com/124/pres49.html

<excerpt:>

I AM certain that my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our Nation impels. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.

<sad irony department:>

In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days.

1. Inspiring speech
It's always kind of been one of my favorites, especially as of late... it's funny, I went to go look it up on Google but decided to check this place out first.

4. yeah it is.
it's the first time i read the whole thing. it's great. i wish we had leaders like that. even the language of the speech makes me wonder if people used to be smarter.

i was looking for that quote "nothing to fear but fear itself" because i wanted to encourage folks on DU to not succumb to fear, and to not fuel hysteria and fear by posting scary, unsubstantiated rumor, and dire scenarios of a future which has not yet unfolded.

we are constantly bombarded by media that attempts to create a climate of fear, and an administration that maintains its power by spreading fear. I think we should do everything we can to counter that. Remain calm and levelheaded and have an optimistic vision for the future that we work tirelessly towards.

8. I just watched "Eleanor and Franklin" on DVD last night...
...and I was brought to tears MANY times, Roni.:cry: ESPECIALLY after watching what the anti-President act like a dickwad for the last week.

If only we could resurrect the dead...:cry:
