The longer-term implications of Katrina..

I don't see much discussion (although, maybe I'm over looking it) about the long-term implications of having a large number of displaced Americans going all over the country. Let's think about what it might mean -

Generally, increased strain on the public and health systems - both in the terms of cost and personnel. This means doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, teachers, etc. Where will this money come from, and where will the people come from?

How will these processes influence political discourse?

Will people be able to remain focused on helping the NO-ers, or will things spiral downward even more in terms of civility? I hope we can pull together, become more united, and for god's sake become a more thoughtful, humane nation.

The PEOPLE aren't the problem. They're more than willing to help. It's the political operatives and bureaucrats that are going to screw things up.
