I'm not even going to try to write in French....my brain is too tired after a day of crying and reading and crying and watching (though it is NOTHING compared to the misery you and others are experiencing).

I so very much wanted to move to Montreal...spent the last two years with that intention....but it seems it's not meant to be.

I wish you the very best....I hope everything gets much, much better and brighter for you from now on.....O8)

58. Life can play crule jokes
As I said in a post below: It turns out it is ONLY for Tulane students - the wealthy elite - you know, trust-fund babies. They will fly them up there free of charge, while we poor, public university students, with no homes or rich families in Connecticut, etc. have to eat gruel... Is there no justice for those who truly want to learn and expand their minds, even though they have little or no belongings? ... merd ... :(

15.  USA media will not inform the public, just as they did not on 9/11 about
Canada's help....Remember how we took in all those planes that were not allowed to land in the States on 9/11?....We landed hundreds of them right across Canada, not knowing if they might contain a terrorist...We looked after the American passengers for almost a week and this was never mentioned on CNN or any USA network....Three years later Bush came to Halifax and made a little thank you Canada speech and we were supposed to feel eternally grateful that he mentioned us....I'm puzzled why the USA media seems to deliberately omit telling of anything good Canada does, but it sure looks that way...

I hope I don't sound paranoid, but I have noticed this for a while now.

17. I don't think it's just Canadian help that is overlooked.
The American right love to stoke xenophobic hatred and a victim complex, and encourage the misperception that Americans are on their own in the world simply because their government is universally reviled.

I have noticed also, during the 9/11 deal, that the American media would say what every other country was doing to help, but would not mention Canada....When I noticed it, I started watching to be sure...and I'm afraid it is....IMO
P.S....I know this sounds paranoid, that's why I hated saying it, but I have been aware of this for some time now....

25. That is true.
Bush's neglect to thank Canada for sheltering so many who had their flights redirected on 9/11 really hurt. We felt taken for granted, and we don't like that feeling.

This disaster, though, the talking point is "where is everyone?"

39. The US media overlooks Canada's help because they overlook
EVERYONE's help and offers of help because they are so *ing self-absorbed and egomaniacal that it is beyond belief. Every flag waved is a display of egomania - it is a disease of epidemic proportions here. Patriotism means dismissing, neglecting, destroying peoples from any other country -- and doing the same to US citizens to the extent they can get away with it.

I am ashamed.

I was deeply, deeply appreciative of Canada's help after 9/11.
I am deeply, deeply appreciative of Canada's help now.

I will try to keep the wonderful images you have posted in mind tonight when I go to bed - clinging to some hope for the people of NOLA; clinging to some hope for someday living in a country that regards itself as equal to all other nations.

53. On CNN
I couldn't believe CNN saying Americans have opened their wallets to the victims.....then they go to break and return to say 200 million has been raised by the red cross. What they didn't say is that it was from international donations as well.

But at a time like this, why get petty?

61. They aren't 'getting' petty - to them you are invisible -
The rest of the world is invisible to Americans. There are hungry brown children 'out there' somewhere and we send spare change and get to pat ourselves on the back for being the most generous country on earth. (Don't you love the way we refer to ourselves as 'Americans' as if no one else lives in North or South America?)

It is simply not possible that any other country is giving American anything - we give to you, you don't give to us. How dare you be so impudent?

I am 40-years-old and I do not remember any incident during my life (or before) in which America said a humble 'Thank You' to another country. We won WWI. We won WWII. Yes, singlehandedly. Other than France giving us the Statue of Liberty - no other country, no other people is ever, ever thanked.

Why? Again - you are invisible. I swear I heard Toni Morrison recently - a televised lecture - say that fewer than 10% of the American public had a passport. A huge majority of Americans will live and die never having stepped foot off of American soil. The average European speaks 2.5 languages; the average American speaks less than 1.0 languages.

Other than the countries (and religions) who 'hate us for our freedom' and 'want to destroy our very way of life' -- you don't exist. International events are not covered in the American media. Okay - an occasional act of God gets some coverage - earthquake, tsunami - but the news will soon be back to normal and it is all about us, us, us, us, us, us, us, us, us, us, us. I guarantee that 80% of Americans who know who Hugo Chavez is, learned about him only because Pat Roberts threatened assassination -- and the news was about Roberts not Chavez.

I was raised in a very typical - not overly patriotic - American household. Still I was seeped in tales of America The Superpower; America the Beautiful; America The Light of the World. There may be people from different lands who are now Americans, but we don't socialize with them and they don't get a voice in the media or in government - unless they are willing to play Uncle Tom.

The neocon extreme statements (such as Bolton's statement about the UN existing only for the convenience of the US) - are reflections of core American beliefs.

This IS the American mindset. I don't know how we change this - I do know that I woke up after 9/11. I did not believe Newsweek's explanation of "Why They Hate Us" and I went in search of answers.

American Imperialists - who have sent the CIA and US Military out to save their markets and steal their resources 250+ times since WWII - can't allow public education or the media (which they own) to teach Americans about other countries or about the history of our impact on other countries.

Our democracy was bought and paid for a long time ago and the American sheeple will not force a change until a significant majority have been directly, badly hurt by the Imperialists who are in control of this country.

While I am on a rant - US neglect of citizens during Katrina will shake up many African American and Latin American individuals who have been buying into the Imperialist perspective. This summer, I heard James Meredith speak. Meredith was one of the first African Americans to force integration at the University of Miss and he was shot during a Civil Rights march for voter rights. Meredith's message this summer: "America can remain a Great Empire for centuries to come if only it will treat all of its citizens equally." Do you get it? So long as everyone here is treated well we can continue to send 'our troops' to rape, steal, and pillage from the subhumans who are not American citizens. I wonder if watching gov't response to Katrina has touched Meredith - he has a whole lot invested in his imperialistic view of the world.

I am telling you the secrets of American consciousness so that you can understand and, please god, help us. The situation is worse than just our having a horrid, illegitimate government -- the problem is deeper, it is in the consciousness of each American addicted to 'our very way of life'. You will not be thanked for what you (the world) do for us - how often do addicts thank people who try to push them into rehab?

The only question in my mind is how low we will have to go before we reach bottom - how many people will have to die before millions of Americans are shocked out of this mindset?

(There are no emoticons that can express the extent of my rage; sadness; and even - at time - despair.)

End

31. Good point!
What does DART do?

DART consists of about 200 Canadian Forces staff who can ship out quickly to conduct emergency relief operations for up to 40 days.

The team has four main goals:

Provide basic medical care: Its tented medical aid station can serve up to 250 outpatients and 10 inpatients a day. The medical platoon treats minor injuries and tries to keep diseases from spreading, but doesn't perform surgeries. The aid station includes a lab, a pharmacy, limited obstetrics services and rehydration and preventative medicine section.

Produce safe drinking water: Water purification staff can produce up to 50,000 litres of potable water a day, as well as chlorinating local wells and monitoring water supplies.

Repair basic infrastructure: Engineers can fix roads and bridges, repair electrical and water supply systems and build refugee camps.

Make communication easier: DART sets up facilities to make communication easier between everyone involved in the relief effort, including the afflicted country, non-governmental organizations and UN aid agencies.

46. So Martin offered DART on Sept. 2nd...
(but it Anne McClelland offered it on Aug. 31 according CTV) and it would have been deployed within 12 hours.

So assuming that DART had been deployed on the 31st, 12 hours to deploy, then what, maybe 12 hours to get to NOLA by Hercules?

They could have been there late Thursday or early Friday to help.

Ontario has also offered to send hydro workers and it's Emergency Medical Assistance Team. I haven't heard any news as to whether they'll be allowed to help.

This just astounds me.

44. Globe and Mail reports that Air Canada did something right!
They were asked to send a plane to help evacuate hospital patients, and they did so the following day. Robert Milton (the CEO) came along and acted as a baggage handler because they didn't have enough "real" personnel to spare.
