An earthquake in Guatamala killed 23,000 in 1976
The volcanic eruption of Krakatoa and tidal wave killed 36,000 in Indonesia in 1883

The United States has never had a natural disaster approaching this kind of casualty figure.

The death toll in the Chicago fire of 1871 is estimated at 300.
The death toll in the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 is estimated at 700, although it actually may have been quite a bit higher.
A hurracaine in Galveston, Texas killed about 6000 in 1900
