I predicted this, too ... along time ago.

Thomas lets Bush play the race card, which is now especially important because of the controversy surrounding the hurricane evacuations.

Any criticism of Thomas will be counter by call it another "high tech lynching".

Bush would go down in history as chosing the first African-American Chief Justice ... take that Thurgood Marshall!

Thomas now has plenty of experience on the court.

Thomas nominated as Chief Justice confirms daddy Bush's wisdom in picking him for the court in the first place.

It satisfies the demands of the Christofascist right. Thomas is closer to the so-called "Constitution in Exile" movement than is Scalia.

Thoma,s as an Opus Dei member, makes the conservative Catholics happy.

It gives Bush the opportunity to make another associate justice appointment -- a young, stealth nutso rightwinger to the court.

For all those reasons, I think Thomas is a more likely pick than Scalia.

Thomas is a better choice for the powers that be. He's nothing. He owns nothing, he's connected to nothing, has no particular personal agenda besides proving that he is "not like the other blacks"?
