Oprah is doing a show Tuesday about Katrina.
For all the people who wanted to know "Where's Oprah?", there she is.

She's doing a show "on location". In case anyone needs reminding, she has 20 million + viewers in this country alone.

She does not host a political show, so I do not expect to hear that much political talk. I do expect her to raise awareness, and that can only be good for the victims/survivors.

I hope her stage is colored purple.

Will she be an investigative reporter or a waste of time that should have stayed in Chicago?

16. She is no Diane Sawyer, for one thing.
Also, it is not her job to ask tough questions *necessarily*. I think she has unfairly had to deal with people *wanting* her to be Oprah Sharpton or something--she has an entertainment talk show. Yes she does have millions of views. Yes she does have a great deal of influence and she knows it. This is actually the burden for most black entertainers, that they're supposed to be the voice of their people or something. I can see how that would be irritating.

But still.

That said, she is from MS I believe, and I tend to think she's not going to be complimentary about children getting raped in the Superdome and old people waiting on their roofs for help that didn't come.

3. Oprah should be angry as hell
On a humanitarian level (no food/water for day after day after day) and the deplorable conditions all resulting in babies and old people dying. Mostly poor, black people suffering.

She SHOULD be MAD AS HELL! And she is a voice for these poor victims of GWB's incompetence...let's hope she raises her voice.

33. I'm beginning to think most DU'ers (not all) hate Oprah and want
to see her fall just because she's a successful black woman. What possible other reason could some of you people have for degrading this woman for? You need to look deep in your own souls and compare what you feel for humanity against what Oprah feels for humanity. I think you're going to come up extremely short on your end. Sometimes I think there's more hatred for Oprah on DU than for Rush, and it's just amazing to me. Get over it. She will never fall just because you want her to.

34. exactly right
I don't see people asking "What's Bill Gates doing" or "What's Warren Buffet doing?". But they take the ONE black woman billionaire in the country and there'll all over her, as if she's the ONLY rich person with obligations to help others.

She does pretty well in that regard. I don't understand why people here just love to tear her down. Is it racism? Sexism?

47. Personally--I don't want to see her fail,
I don't begrudge her success. I was as proud as anyone to see her success. I just feel she is hypocritical and phony.

My present feelings came after supporting her for many other years.

I'm sorry if my feelings hurt those that still enjoy her work. I just don't. I don't begrudge anyone enjoying her or what she does, and I would never wish her failure. She DOES do a lot of good for the world, whatever my personal feelings of her may be...

I am however glad that she is taking her very large viewership(through television cameras) to NOLA and showing them what is going on. I am relatively certain she will point out that racism is what abandoned the people of the city. Or at least that is my hope. If I am correct--I will be quite grateful and thankful to see her use her power for this particular purpose.

All that matters is that she brings more attention to the dispicable way that the people of NOLA were abandoned. That is ALL that matters. She will do this...

79. Pish-posh.
I don't hate her because she's a "successful black woman." I just don't see her doing enough for her own, and I guess that's what I find disappointing. I mean, what was her performance on "The Color Purple" all about. Was it really all just acting? Or was there someone in there that wanted to do right by the people who shared her history, if she ever had the chance?

I don't really care for soap opera type talk shows, so I guess I'm not into whatever it is that Oprah does on her show. Let her make money if that's what she wants. As long as she's not duplicitous. Maybe her role in the movie, was just acting. That's her right, I guess.

She has said she'd campaign for the man...the woman is a Democrat and her Arnold tomfoolery was about a friendship with Shriver.

You may find Obama too moderate, but to Oprah he is the vision of African American uplift.

I bet the show will be quite honest about what race and class had to do with this fiasco.

I think it's good of Oprah to be doing something public so soon. The reality is she and her show are trusted by a national fan base and nothing but good can come from it IMO.

John Grisham announced publicly that his family was donating 5 mil and made the amount public in hopes it would encourage others to do so too. I hope the likes of Oprah and Grisham get the ball rolling with other high profile celebs.

She won't do a political show where she promotes candidates or shows where she stands 9with an exception for her friend Maria Shriver's husband which was beyond pathetic), but she does criticize things that have gone wrong.

She does amazing amazing work in Africa (where among other things she has opened schools) and I would be surprised if she didn't make parallels.

As Maya has said, Without Courage, one cannot pratice the other Virtues. Wishing you much Courage Oprah, because in her own way and at a place of her choosing, you will not believe what she can unleash. Please remember Oprah has way more than a television program, she is also a producer, a CEO, and has a magazine. Oprah is going to follow Maya's example and demonstrate courage first.

Her idea of charity sometimes seems to be giving away cars to lots (but not all of them) of people who can afford their own.

And jewelry, and chotchkas, and ...

These are all calculated to generate tons of screaming amotion, often based upon greed.

And then other times she trots out lots of people with problems of various kinds to pump the pathos.

To me, it's all usually rather disgusting.

But then that's me.

watched the car giveaway. Her staff went to great lenghts to try and find people who actually needed a car, and on her Christmas giveaway shows, no one who knows anyone on the staff can go to that show. Her best friend Gayle had given tickets to a friend to give to thier friends, whom she didn't even know, and they were asked how they got their tickets. When they said through Gayle, they were turned away and not allowed in.

I imagine this show on Katrina while not being intentionally political will be intensely revealing on the inadequacies of the bushwa.

on the show prior to the election.

I feel she thought she was being fair in showing both candidates...

It just seems that in her need to please everyone and be fair, some of her viewership may have seen this as an endorsement on her part.

But I don't blame her for that--it's just one of the repercussions of making choices that affect a HUGE viewership like hers. So hard, trying to be all things to all people. Be fair to her viewers and the network, but somehow infuse it with your own ideals...

Tough job...

She has brought attention to so many atrocities around the globe and because she has a personal friend that was running for governor, that we happen to hate, she is now an evil person.

There have been a number of threads, asking where is Oprah. Were they asking so that they could show up to bash her efforts?

Black people around this country are looking and recording what happened in New Orleans and trust me when I tell you that this will probably be very personal for her. I would be surprised if she showed any kindness to Bush and his administration.

I will wait until I see the show before I begin to bash her for showing up like people wanted her to.

61. MESSAGE TO OPRAH: GO F YOURSELF!
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 09:58 PM by anarchy1999
Not political, I beg to differ. Too bad, anyplace you could possibly stand in a ceremony is under water. That's not a good photo op.

Let us just keep doing human interest disaster type BS. Hey O, who owns you, who did you let yourself get bought out by?

I've not liked you much at all since I heard and read about your big 50th birthday hoedown. How much gold did you throw at that big event? Tell us again? How many days did it last?

Thanks for stepping up for Cindy, for the Vets for Peace, for MFSO, for GSFP and VIPS and the Bring Them Home Now and well all the rest that are standing up and speaking truth to power.

Hey O, have you ever heard of GrannyD. Have you ever had her on your program? If you did I missed it. I'm hoping I just missed it. If not, well then, there is much you could learn from this amazing woman, she has lots to teach you.

If your aren't interested, then maybe you might like to set something up with Laura B and Kay Bailey H. You know, a photo op something in the Highland Park area of Dallas that was really the Bush home before George became Gov. of Tx.

What comes around does indeed go around, are you sure you want to "stay the course".

Here is your real opportunity, O! Would you like for me to put you in touch with the youngest person that is known for marching with Martin Luther King, I'm betting you don't know who that might be or even where to find him and I'm also betting you don't have a clue as to what happened with a very well known activist on his way from Crawford back to DFW to catch a plane after visiting the Crawford protest.

I'm just betting you don't have a single clue and by the way, where were you all month long, on vacation too?

Good luck O! I hope you are worthy.

Peace,
anarchy1999

Peace.

Atleast she's trying can you say the same about HILLARY CLINTON?
Atleast she's trying can you say the same about Dianne Feinstein?
Atleast she's trying can you say the same about Martha Stewart?
Atleast she's trying can you say the same about Bill Gates?
Atleast she's trying can you say the same about Donald Trump?
Atleast she's trying can you say the same about David Letterman?

...oh right you don't care if they don't do anything, gee I wonder why?

66. Give Oprah the Benefit of the Doubt.
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 10:58 PM by philosophie_en_rose
I'm not a sycophant, but look at her work in Africa. She has made things happen in Africa that need to happen now in New Orleans.

She's not going to overlook the fact that the majority of victims are Black. She's not going to ignore the parallels between the reaction to genocide and suffering in Africa and what's being done in Louisiana. I hope she interviews Aaron Broussard.

The fact is that she doesn't need to point the finger at Bush. The facts speak for themselves. The federal government has failed. People that can't see that aren't going to be influenced by Oprah anyway.

If it's a fluff piece, I'll be the first to eat my words and condemn it. But let's give Oprah the benefit of the doubt.

80. oh for pete's sake!
She couldn't have helped Al Gore any more than she did. She gave him the season opening show (NOT BUSH)--and therefore, all of the commercials for her season open were of her and Gore. Bush was second.
Bush also got questions about the death penalty in TX where he looked like a dork, other tough questions...

And he kissed her on the cheek. I've seen the picture, she doesn't look thrilled. Was she supposed to punch him in the face? :eyes:

Also, after we bombed Afghanistan, Bush wanted to use her by sending her there--she said NO.

People are talking such shit in this thread!

73. I don't have much to say about Oprah as I never watch her
, am not a real TV person, except to monitor some of the "news" pieces,,and KO .But my thought is , she probably has a lot of African American fans, and if she gives them a lift, why not ? I think she probably inspires a lot of people or she would not be so popular.Everyone to their own tastes.
