I cried after reading this: World offers cash, aid to stricken southern US
snip:
French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said France would send its entire stock of emergency supplies, including tents, blankets, cooking equipment and camp-beds, prepositioned on the French Caribbean island of Martinique for just such an eventuality. Douste-Blazy said one shipment would leave from Fort-de-France within 24 hours and another within 48 hours.

Britain was to send 500,000 military ration packs to the devastated regions, the ministry of defence said Sunday.

The armed forces meal boxes -- which include a 24-hour food supply -- will be flown to the US early Monday to help feed the homeless.

Germany shipped 25 tonnes of food aid to the flood-stricken regions over the weekend, the defence ministry said Sunday.

An Italian military plane was expected to leave Sunday for the United States with first aid kits for 15,000 people, as well as infant food, blankets, pumps, water-purifying devices and inflatable rafts.

The United States also accepted an offer of UN assistance and consultations were underway on how to best complement US aid efforts, a UN spokesman said Sunday.

"The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the World Food Program, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the High Commissioner for Refugees are ready to provide emergency staff and a wide variety of relief supplies as and when necessary," the spokesman said a statement.

Kuwait is offering 500 million dollars (400 million euros) in oil products "needed by the afflicted states in these conditions and other humanitarian assistance," Energy Minister Sheikh Ahmad Fahd al-Sabah told the official KUNA news agency on Sunday.

Qatar had pledged 100 million dollars on Sunday.

Canada said Sunday it was sending thousands of camp-beds, blankets and medical supplies after a request from Washington for help.

snip:
Thirty-five Canadian military divers have begun to arrive in the region to help with repair efforts.

War-torn and desperately poor Afghanistan has offered 100,000 dollars in disaster relief aid, the US embassy in Kabul announced Sunday.

The Indonesian government, still coping with the aftermath of the December 26 tsunami, has offered to send 40 medical doctors to the United States, state media said Sunday, quoting a senior minister.

South Korea on Sunday offered to donate 30 million dollars in cash as part of its planned humanitarian aid, officials said.

Over the weekend Norway offered the United States 10 million kroner (1.6 million dollars, 1.3 million euros) to help relief efforts.

Sri Lanka -- also still recovering from the December 26 tsunami which devastated the island's coastlines and killed 31,000 people -- said it had donated 25,000 dollars and asked doctors to help.

China said it would offer five million dollars, while Japan said it had proposed sending an emergency rescue team.

India said it will provide five million dollars and essential medicines, and has offered water purification systems for use in households and small communities in the stricken areas, where potable water is a key concern.

The Philippines announced the dispatch of a 25-member team of aid workers with the first 10 members of the team, consisting of doctors, nurses and sanitary engineers, scheduled to leave this week.

Cuba and Venezuela, two Latin American countries often singled out for criticism by administration of US President George W. Bush, were among the first to offer humanitarian assistance.

4. Considering how many Americans...
...spend their time tearing apart the UN and some of its members, they certainly don't seem to have any problem taking aid from them.

I guess the French are only "cheese eating surrender monkeys" when they won't bomb civilians at our behest. But when Georgie gets caught fiddling while NOLA floods, then they'll take whatever the Gallic allies have to offer.

12. I found this list that has them on it.
Sixty donors heed hurricane victims' cry for help

Victims of Hurricane Katrina, which has devastated New Orleans and US Gulf Coast states, are to receive aid from 60 international donor nations.

The United States, a major world donor itself, last week let it be known it would accept help from a variety of nations after the hurricane killed thousands and left New Orleans largely submerged.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice decided "no offer that can help alleviate the suffering of the people in the afflicted area will be refused".

The donors include long-time US friends such as Australia, Japan, Germany, Canada, France and Britain.

Cuban President Fidel Castro is also willing to donate doctors and medicine.

The Venezuelan Government, which is frequently criticised by the Bush administration, has also offered help.

International organisations and religious institutions also offered assistance ranging from medical teams to tents to cash donations.

They include NATO, the Organisation of American States, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the World Health Organisation, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Socities and Cor Unum, the Vatican's central charity organisation.

The United Nations has offered to help coordinate international relief.

Among the donors are:

Australia: "We're going to provide $10 million and the bulk of that money, if not all of it, will go to the American Red Cross," said Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer.

Canada: Defence Minister Bill Graham has indicated that three warships and a Coast Guard vessel are being loaded with relief supplies and 1,000 personnel. They will be ready to travel to Louisiana as required in the coming days.

China: China has offered $US5 million in aid for victims. If needed, the Chinese Government is also prepared to send rescue workers, including medical experts.

Cuba: Cuban President Fidel Castro has offered to fly 1,100 doctors to Houston with 26 tonnes of medicine to treat victims.

Iran: Although branded part of the "axis of evil", Iran has offered to send humanitarian aid.

"The victims have complained about the lack of timely assistance and we are prepared to send our contributions to the people through the Red Crescent," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said.

Israel: Sending health and defence officials to the US to help coordinate aid.

Mexico: Is sending 15 truckloads of water, food and medical supplies via Texas and the Mexican Navy has offered to send two ships, two helicopters and 15 amphibious vehicles.

Netherlands: Will provide teams for inspecting dykes and for identifying victims if there is a formal request from the United States.

Saudi Arabia: Saudi Refining, a Houston-based subsidiary of state oil firm Saudi Aramco, will donate $6.5 million to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts.

United Nations: The United Nations says its staff will be based at the USAID Hurricane Operations Centre, where international assistance is being coordinated.

Venezuela: President Hugo Chavez, a vocal critic of the United States, has offered to send cheap fuel, humanitarian aid and relief workers to the disaster area.

The UN says donors "are ready to provide emergency staff and a wide variety of relief supplies as and when necessary".

I am too.
Even those that we have villified can differentiate. Most know that American people, as a whole, are goodhearted and would help anyone in their time of need.
They also know that, politically speaking, most Americans don't even vote so whoever is in power isn't necessarily the true representative of how America really feels.

37. I think they know how most Americans really are.
Most of us don't want to get involved in other peoples personal business(anywhere from abortion to gay marriage). Most don't care what "they"(as in anyone besides theirselves) does, just as long as they want to work and are good neighbors. Most Americans just want make enough money to raise their families(or live a comfortable life for themselves) and be left alone.
I think the world knows this about us.

44. And how do we get that aid to the people through the thieving,
incompetent, racist, Bushite FEMA bottleneck? From what I've been reading, people in THIS country, from other states, have been right there offering all kinds of help that has been turned away. The Bush Cartel is not interested in helping people, only in grabbing big bucks from whatever disasters they create or exacerbate--whether stolen from us, or now, possibly, from these generous countries. I'm very worried about this. WHO is going to be in charge of these donations?

It is so awesome to me that countries that the Bush Cartel has been demonizing--Venezuela, Iran, Cuba--have offered aid--Venezuela and Cuba among the first to be there with aid packages. I hope that the assistance of all of these countries does not end up in the pockets of the rich, or, if it's material goods, commandeered--for instance, to further the war in Iraq. The Bushites are such filthy, murdering bastards, I would put nothing past them.

The generosity of these countries makes me feel that we are not alone. I knew that in some respects anyway. (Hugo Chavez had offered cheap gas and some medical aid to America's poor BEFORE the hurricane--his "turn the other cheek" answer to Pat Robertson's call for his assassination.) But I wish there was a way for LOCAL people to receive this disaster relief--to bypass our illegitimate and criminal federal government.

Dear Friends,

The Veterans For Peace White Rose bus is in Louisiana
near New Orleans providing immediate relief to those
suffering. On board are two experienced combat
medics, US Army Medic and former drill sgt Dennis Kyne
and US Navy Surgical Technician Gordon Soderberg. Sgt
Kyne and HM2 Soderberg served in the Middle East, Kyne
in Iraq and Soderberg in Lebanon following the Marine
barracks bombing....he received special recognition
for his service to the many wounded there. These
experienced combat medics may be capable of remarkable
work IF they get the supplies and support they need.
Unlike many medical professionals they are used to
working in the field without electricity, but they
still need basic supplies.

I give you what correspondence I have had. Patrick
Tate is the one to contact but they only have internet

rakes and other tools to clean up and make our own
space "People's Park". The sense of community is
astounding, everyone comes looking for a handout and
we tell them we want them to pull together with us and
they are doing it.

FEMA is handing out ice and water at the Target store
down the freeway, but there is no gas for most to get
there with.

We came in with water and food from Camp Casey and are
doing all we can. The sooner we know that we have
funds too work with the sooner we can resupply. The
need is huge, though at least most still have some
form of shelter here unlike New Orleans.

Covington is located in a poor rural Parrish that has
seen 'white flight' coming in, much like Mendocino
County. The poor have little to sustain them now that
the safety net is broken.

We have established the camp in the name of Chapter
116 and the Louisiana Action Network and it is our
project. Let's see what we can do.

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power we
will have peace." - Jimi Hendrix

Ask everyone to help out and someone please contact
KZYX/Z and put out the word. Mendocino County leads
the recovery, but needs money to continue.
Follow our action on our website at

address, or to Redwood Credit Union in Ukiah,
deposited to Veterans for Peace Chapter 116.

56. Last I heard, BUSH REFUSED ALL FOREIGN HELP - has that suddenly changed?

Thread title: Aid offers pour in from around the globe (Bush rejects it)

That's not just arrogance. I think the neocons WANT racial/class tensions as high as they can hype them in this country, and they are stirring the cauldron o desperation by withholding aid and relief and keeping contact and communication with the rest of the country minimal. If there is a protest, something that can be photographed in such a way that it looks scary and extensive, in a city either in the afflicted areas or elsewhere around the country, you can bet it will be hyped to the skies. They want the people desperate and they want as much racial/class tension as possible. So why would they let AID come in? It would spike their plans and reveal even more clearly to EVERYONE IN THE WORLD that the murderous delays had to be deliberate. The other countries in the world KNOW how to get in there and do what needs to be done and the contrast isn't something Bush wants to allow.

To give you a clearer idea of the scope of what is moving here, please read this article, written in Dec 2003 as a response to Gen Tommy Franks' unusually - well - frank statement that one more hit (like 9/11) and the Constitutional protections of citizens would be suspended. (John Dean calls what would happen next "constitutional dictatorship.") Read the whole article, please, but I'm going to give you the paragraph that sticks in my mind. Think of it when you see all the hyped and fabricated reports of "rampaging looters™" and "out of control roving gangs™" coming soon to get YOU!!! The neocon leadership thinks they can get us to view our fellow Americans as their next model of "terra-ists™" and scare us into letting them "protect us" from these non-existent hordes. Hey, look how well it worked for them since 9/11!

It was the Nine Years' War in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World that facilitated the seizure of power by the world reformers who then took control of nearly all human and social development. In 1984, George Orwell described Oceania as in a constant state of war with a changeable enemy who "always represented absolute evil." These inventors of the great dystopias understood the way governments use war and its associative fear and instability to consolidate power. Despotism thrives on insecurity. Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs puts safety right behind food, water and sleep. Humans naturally crave stability and are willing to sacrifice values such as liberty in its pursuit.

57. Yes, it's in the article I posted
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 10:13 PM by cynatnite
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States officially asked for emergency aid from the European Union and accepted assistance from the United Nations, as countries around the world pledged help for the hundreds of thousands left homeless by Hurricane Katrina.

While US President George W. Bush initially politely refused offers of aid, the White House reversed course as the magnitude of the destruction wreaked across an area of the US Gulf Coast the size of Great Britain became clear.

59. Thank god he was forced into it. He couldn't get away with refusing any
more, no matter how much he wanted to.

Thank god, this gives me hope.

First: the rest of the world knows how to get the job done and care for those sick, traumatized people. Second: the rest of the world is going to see first-hand the murderous evil that the Bush Administration has done in deliberately delaying relief and our Poodle Press will not be able to completely excuse the outpouring of facts, evidence and heartfelt outrage. The internet carries WORLD news, and we are going to take it to our people so they will see the truth at last.

Most of all, oh god, those suffering, desperate, heartbroken despairing people will be cared for and reunited with their families if they are still alive.

Did you see the heartbreaking thread about the New Orleans woman who was killed just after the hurricane and lay there for FOUR DAYS? Her neighbors came back and realized that the authorities would just leave her there longer. Read about what they did. The picture haunts me. There they are, clasping their hands together and mourning their friend, whom they gave as much dignity as they could.

60. They showed it on TV
Broke my heart.

The more we shame bush & minions, the better. I am so glad the world is watching and are willing to reach out to those who need it in spite of the bastards that are running this country.

When I read the list of foreign countries helping the victims to my hubby, he asked why on earth anyone would turn it down. The only answer I could come up with was pride. bush thinks the US should go it alone on everything and be the strongest country on the planet. It boils down to pride.

He shook his head and said something about how his damn pride is killing people.

to increase so they can hype them into the fear and division that would allow them to move further toward total suspension of Constitutional safeguards against military dictatorship.

Fear and any scenes of violence in the afflicted south or around the country that they can twist and distort and hype - or fabricate - to scare the rest of the country would be useful to them just as the 9/11 attacks were useful to them.

Here is an article written in Dec 2003 in response to Franks' amazing interview, the one in which he said that one more hit would be enough for them to suspend the Constitution. This entire article is excellent and prescient, but I'm going to quote the paragraph that especially grabbed my attention.

It's also possible that they WANT to keep the people out of New Orleans so it can be torn down and turned over to more oil refineries and shipyards instead. Its strategic position is unmatchable over a wide area. Hastert said very early that he thought that rebuilding New Orleans "didn't make sense." I've heard that since then he's tried to waffle about that clear statement, but he made it and it was revealing.

58. Repukes don't agree (what a surprise)
On many forums the feneral attitude from right wingers are:
A) USA do not need international assistance
B) USA is the best country in the world and we do nothing wrong and we don't need help
C) UN can go fuck itself
D) We don't need no stinking french help
D) Fox news shows people refusing to be evacuated so there is obvisouly no need for more help

And other things that makes me go postal, not to mention how they are excusing the chimp and applauding how they have handled the situation. One can only wonder what insane world these people live in, it's certainly not the same as I live in.

61. Now the next hurdle. Will the Bush Administration insist on taking control
of the cash and the equipment but not allow rescue teams and other workers and reporters from foreign countries? Will he still try to continue to suppress and control it all to get the ugly results he wants?

And could he get away with it?

I do think the heat is finally being turned up.

63. unfortunately much given to Red cross and not to funds that
these poor victims will see - RC tries to get people into relatives houses and stops helping them - they are not the short term or long term solution - they are not in Jefferson Parish, at the convention center, the dome or the underpass - people need a car to get to them - they do no help the poor as they need to be helped

and unfortunately FEMA turns away much of the help
