They kept one eye on the polls and coveted the recent "success" of Republicans. They wanted to seem more like the "winners".
It's ugly, but it is human nature, or, fashion sense.
Notice that now that Dean has tested the waters (out of courage or pragmatism, take your pick - I think it was courage), and found success, many of those previously timid folks are finding their voice. That's a good thing, in my opinion, as many of those folks really do have progressive conviction, they have merely suppressed it until now.
Some day soon, you may see Repubes trying to ape successful Democrats.
BTW, the phrase "Bush-lite" has been maligned. It really refers not to any person(s), but rather to the tendencies described above, of the desire to appear similar to, or to seem helpful to or supportive of, the "winners" in power.
