remember the story of 'ghetto fries' here on DU? some (maybe even many, for i stopped watching the thread) DUers were outraged at 'ghetto fries' and cried racism.

now, as we're watching NOLA and its residents being Left to die, some are cLaiming it's not racist.

i'm baffLed by some 'progressives' priorities. x(

Remember that plenty of white folks in nursing homes drowned--the mandatory evacuation "plan" seemed to work for the wealthy able-bodied folks, and not for anyone else. I think it's easier to make the racism argument for the looting coverage and such than it is for the lack of response--the lack of response hurt many invalid and elderly white folks and thousands of poor white folks without access to transportation in the same way it hit the impoverished black folks. That NOLA's poor population is overwhelmingly black is evidence of institutional racism, and I'd say the further lack of response and the callous treatment of those who stayed could easily have something to do with racism. But the initial failure to help those who couldn't get out I think was a mix of stupidity and apathy for those not able-bodied or wealthy. They may care about blacks less than whites, but I know for sure they cared less about the poor and invalid than they did about the wealthy and able-bodied. The first federal declarations were about protecting property from looting, and not about getting aid to those left behind, after all. Does that make sense?
