I am so sad

I cry every morning and every night thinking about what is going on in NOLA. I feel like my hands are tied. I want to do something.

I signed up to volunteer at the red cross. I brought a HUGE bag of diapers and baby bottles and other stuff my daughter wasn't using to the shelter they have in Charlotte.

I met a little girl who was eating lunch with her mom. They just got in from NOLA. The little girl ( 2years) had no spark in her eye, she looked so scared. I have her a book that had stories of fairy tales etc ... She hugged my leg and thanked me because she had a book like this at her house.

I can not get that little girls face out of my mind. I cry every time I think of her

11. That's very wise-- it can become overwhelming

I used to think I HAD to be up on every piece of news but
I quickly discovered that I was on overload all the time.
Stressed and depressed. When you get that way, you MUST
take a breather.

This stuff is so awful that one can absorb only so much.

It's not cold-- it's called survival. When you care TOO
much, you can become utterly buried in the pain. So you
have to pace yourself and know when to back off.

The first time I heard someone advocate not watching the news r reading it I thought that was rediculous to be intentionally ignorant. I have been without TV for more than 10 years. I still get all the important news. I just avoid a lot of unimportant details and useless bad things I can't do anything about.

9. I am sad and angry

I'm not supposed to weep. I'm a man. Be a mensch. Suck it up and all that.
The response to Katrina has made me weep way to much.
All this suffering was so avoidable and unecessary. This really is a criminal act by BushCo. How many American have died (and are dying) because of these monsters? From Iraq to Katrina is a trail of such staggering incompetence and theft nothing in American history compares.

10. I've been crying on and off all day

Seeing that Parish president weep on Meet the Press this morning unlocked some memories from childhood when our house burnt down and we lost my paternal grandmother and my parents thought we had lost my only brother. (turned out my brother was fine) As we pulled up to our house, my Dad sat on the stoop with his head in his hands crying. It scared me shitlees. My sixth grade year was a blur after that.

I was thinking of stuff like that while I was hanging laundry out this afternoon and came in the house sobbing. My Dad passed away in January, so that came into the mix.

comfort to know that others are weeping too. Doesn't make you feel as if you're the only sad, furious, crazy one. I'm sorry about your Dad. Did you read the post right before yours...a man weeping...almost responded to him, and then I read your post. Your post should console him too. When Men weep, we know that things are really bad. I wept right along with Aaron Broussard when I saw MTP.

It feels like I will never get out of this funk. I am a native of Louisiana, but I live about as far as you can and still live in the continental US. I send money, but I still feel like I can't really help.

17. Thanks so much for posting earthmama! I've cried as much if not more

than 9/11, which was more horror, than the sadness and despair that I've experienced watcing the destruction and drowning of NOLA. It helped me in knowing that others are as sad as I am. I'm sure your post helped others. And your post also included the perfect solution; helping those who really deserve to be sad.
