1. we can remake the democratic party into a true New Deal "labor" (middle class, working class, poor) party

2. we can form a third party that represents that constituency

3. we can watch millions of voters become so apathetic that they will not be a political force for generations

Still the engine driving the greatest affluence ever attained by a free society. And that annoying GI Bill! The greatest social welfare program in history!

My prescription: Let's all go back and listen to FDR's "Four Freedoms" speech:

"The basic things expected by our people of their political

"Equality of opportunity for youth and for others.
Jobs for those who can work.
Security for those who need it.
The ending of special privilege for the few.
The preservation of civil liberties for all.
The enjoyment of the fruits of scientific progress in a

8. I don't think "remake"

is what we're in need of. However, I think that we need to show some restraint of our more eager selves and open our arms as the "party of inclusion" NOT exclusion. That, and that alone, will bring us a long way to healing the rift that the right has built out of straw.
