Red-State Democrats Tilt to Yes on Roberts

"Sen. Kent Conrad, a Democrat from North Dakota, sounds like a swooning Republican when he talks about Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr.

"I am impressed with his demeanor, his intelligence, his sense of humor, his modesty," said Conrad. "Absent some bombshell, which I don't expect, I think he will be confirmed and quite handily."

"You are going to be arguing about issues that we all saw Democrats paid a heavy price for in the last election," said Leon Panetta, a former Democratic House member who served as Bill Clinton's White House chief of staff. "Democrats have a tremendous opportunity right now to hit Bush where he's weak, which is on oil prices and the war. Don't hit him where he's strong, which is these values issues."

"Some Democratic strategists predict Roberts could get as many as 80 votes, including a majority of Senate Democrats, aides say. The only Republican senators considered potential no votes are the handful of moderates who represent states in the Northeast, including Lincoln D. Chafee of Rhode Island. Based on preliminary estimates provided by both sides, roughly 45 senators are considered certain to back Roberts, 15 are considered highly likely to vote for him and 20 or so are considered potential supporters."

"Ben Nelson said the opposition of liberal groups is misguided. "Were they expecting someone from the political left?" said Nelson. "I have yet to see anything in background that I would see as a disqualification."

"Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), a freshman, said he has an open mind heading into the hearings and feels no pressure to side with liberals. "My state is unlike most others -- it is a microcosm of the entire country," he said. "I have got everything from extreme left to extreme right."

1. NOW is the time to attack Bush, Roberts & gang.

You would think given the complete failure of Bush in the last week that the Dem.s would see that NOW is the time to create a united front to W.

EVERY Democratic US Senator could oppose Roberts. Every vote could show a united opposition to Republican folly.

But I guess giving Roberts a wet kiss is so much easier.

2. Afterr Katrina, the point is that this guy is a crony, he's just

another political operative in a robe. He's tainted. The guy in Reid's office told me that "he's dirty" (in terms of ethics) And yet, a large number of Democrats will vote for him and praise him to the sky.

Why should I waste my time anymore??

Mr. Triumph, I've also posted about a united front from now on. The continued bullshit will hurt any candidate who comes out against Bush policies in the future....I agree with Ralph Neas on this (PFAW)---they just have to point and say "his/her own party doesn't support him/her."

3. Bush should not be allowed to make ANY....

...lifetime appointments, hell, he shouldn't be allowed to make ANY appointments. The only appointment he should be making is with a criminal defense lawyer for when he should stand trial for dereliction of duty, lying to EVERYONE, war crimes and treason.

4. Bunch of fucking wimps! After all this, if they approve any Bush

nominee or program, they earn the disrespect of everyone.

Our Senators are the most insulated, out of touch people we've ever had in a position of leadership. They're not only not in touch with the people they represent, they are totally unable to imagine what those people are experiencing, thinking and feeling.

Where's the leadership? Where's the vision? Where's the fight?

5. Leahy isn't so easily convinced on Robertson because the

WH. refused to produce files but implied you'll have to take our word on it respopnse, Leahy says not until I see the report with my own eyes.

6. Supreme Court vacancies, estate taxes and everything else

can go on the back burner.

Congress needs to focus on the crisis 24/7.
And we better be calling them from 7 am EST to 5 pm Mountain tomorrow to make sure they know what their damn priority is.
