I started to answer another post about stop calling "them", "refugees" and

then decided I needed a single post of my own.

I had lunch Friday afternoon before I left Dallas for Crawford, Texas with Rev. Peter Johnson and a number of his friends and associates in the Dallas community. They were all pretty adamant about this issue. I said "refugees" in the midst of a conversation and I was immediately corrected forever. I made sure, for the rest of my time I spent in Crawford that "refugee" was corrected with something better. The people we are trying to save from Louisana and from Mississippi are absolutely not "REFUGEES"! They are citizens of this country in an awful situation that need our help!

David Van Os, Democratic candidate for Attorney General of Texas, is gaining ground in constructing a grass roots campaign that will be inclusive of all Texans. Van Os announces today that Rev. Peter Johnson of Dallas, lifelong advocate for human and civil rights, will be his campaign chairman.

Van Os said, "I am so proud and honored that a man who is such a fighter for the people has agreed to chair my campaign for Attorney General of Texas. Reverend Johnson has fought for over 40 years for the values of freedom, justice, and democracy to which most Texans subscribe. He is a man of impeccable moral character who will lead my campaign to a higher level for the benefit of millions of Texans who are so tired of the cynicism and self-promotion of politics as usual.”

Van Os continued, "Peter Johnson has been in the battle for the highest standards of human decency and compassion all his life. He understands the importance of speaking to the hearts and minds of the people of this great State through the political process.”

Reverend Peter Johnson grew up in a Civil Rights household. Peter officially joined the Civil Rights Movement in 1958 after meeting Mrs. Rosa Parks. He became President of the Youth Chapter of the NAACP. In 1960 he became one of the youngest leaders in the student sit-in movement in the South.

He attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where be became a nationally known student leader. He joined the Freedom Ride and began working full time for the Congress of Racial Equality. After being challenged by his father, he went to work for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) founded by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., where he was the youngest member of the SCLC staff. He is the! youngest man still alive from Dr. King's original staff.

Rev. Johnson continues his commitments to Non-violence and Civil Rights with the Peter Johnson's Institute of Non-Violence and the Dallas Common. For a number of years he was Executive Director of the Dallas Chapter of the SCLC.

Rev. Johnson states, "After spending a great deal of time with David Van Os, I was left with no doubt that David would make an extraordinary Texas Attorney General. David and I had an immediate connection. David is full of passion and is prepared to fight for the people of this great state. David will uphold the Constitution and our Bill of Rights, and will serve the people, not special interest groups or powerful cronies. David is a man of and for the people. On a more personal note, Rev. Johnson's family is from the New Orleans area. I spoke with him tonight. He is missing 11 family members as of now. A very good friend he grew up with who is the Representative of the 96th district, William Jefferson, lost his mother. How? She was in a nursing home. Everyone in the home is gone, drowned!

And then on to a couple of his friends I met in Crawford and again on Friday at lunch......

What is happening is beyond the pale! I'm at a loss and so is everyone else.

I spoke with the Reverend tonight briefly, he had to go because he had opend his home to a number of people from Louisiana and was getting ready to prepare a meal for everyone. He asked me to call in the morning to learn more on how to help in the Dallas area and everywhere else.

My heart is breaking.

2. I think the term has unfairly gained a negative connotation

one that is uneccessarily loaded with negative stereotypes and racial overtones. However, after reading an earlier thread, I now prefer the term "evacuee."
