Rescuers: Not enough resources to save all in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Time is running out for thousands of people awaiting rescue six days after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, rescuers say.

Officials say they do not have the manpower, the resources or enough time to save everyone.

"My guys are coming back and telling me, 'Sir, I went into a house, and there are three elderly people in their beds, and they're gasping, and they're dying,' " Coast Guard Capt. Bruce Jones said.

and not letting anyone into Louisiana to provide assistance unless that get a contract for services from FEMA.

Death certificates will have to list cause of death. So there will be a record, and a reckoning, of how many people died in the storm, and how many died in the aftermath of indifference and neglect.

Exceeding cold comfort indeed. But very useful information for a criminal investigation.

sat back and watch people drown like rats on a ship. Only when the criticism of him started , did he 'act'.

4. Rescue teams have been turned back

one from Virginia -- and I know a rescue team from Seattle should be on scene about now.

Apparently they will all have to go through a Homeland security check?? According to another thread -- buses had to wait for hours to go through a homeland insecurity check.

This whole thing is so fucked up --

In the about time department: boxes of food and water to survivors waiting for rescue.

The coast guard seems to be one of the unsung heros -- plus we need to get this out

The Family Links Registry of the Red Cross can be accessed at on the Web at www.familylinks.icrc.org/katrina. The Red Cross also has established a hotline, 1-877-LOVED-1S (1-877-568-3317), that can be used to search or add information to the registry.

6. There were 50 airboats with experienced rescuers from Florida

willing to come in the day after the hurricane and they were turned away.

They will accept outside help for retrieving dead bodies, not for rescuing the living.

they've received offers of help from the Russians, the French, and a host of other countries since the day after the event . . . and they didn't accept the offers . . . these people belong in prison, not in the White House . . .
