America's Dirty Little Secret Is Out For All To See Now

I was talking to a friend in India today. People there are shocked by what they are seeing on TV. The media in this country, the entertainment industry, madison ave.....all of them

They promote the idea that everybody here is doing just great. People never have to face some of the aweful truths that they would have to face in a country like India for example

Then disasters like this strike and the truth is laid bare for all to see. We never see the poor in this country except when there is a disaster, and even then its more like media rubber-necking at the scene of a bad accident.

Now everybody can see the poor, how they live, and what happens to them when something goes wrong. I think it has been a rude awakening to many people all over the world about the true situation in this country and the exposing of the simple truth:

That we are not special, we are not all swimming in oceans of gold and we are a super-power in name only. People have been saying over and over "this should not happen here" well why not? We treat the poor like dirt, make them live like animals all while telling them to take advantage of what society has to offer. I can only hope that this tragedy opens the eyes of the public to what really goes on around here.

2. Third World America

The propaganda surrounding the so-called American dream has been revealed to be a cheap, sleazy facade. What the Bush cartel of the super rich have tried to do is to shove the dirty little secret of poverty in America under the carpet. The struggle for economic survival even among people who don't "look" poor is something all Americans are going to have to confront. I don't think most people in this country know how perilously close we all are to total economic chaos and what that may mean in terms of our daily survival.

3. and this process started long before Bush

I would say it really started in the 1970s as one of the many responses to the 1960s and the backlash against the Great Society Programs of LBJ.

When Reagan came into power thats when it really took off and has not let up since even a little.

Its been 25 years since reagan came to power so we are talking about 1/4 of a century! Thats a long time to try to sweep this stuff under the rug. Its time we start to deal with the overall inequality and injustice. I hope and pray that the majority of Americans wake up! There is an opportunity here amongst the destruction. If we do not take it to change things then we will be sorry

4. Isn't that kinda' what it's like in a dysfunctional 'family'

When the facade is lifted, the skeletons in the closet appear.

We are living in a true dystopia now.

6. and it was only a matter of time

now will the "powers that be" find a way to close our collective eyes once again? Or will they remain open? Thats the question that I keep going over in my own mind.

5. The super rich are hidden too

Equally sickening is the hidden agenda of the rich, and super rich. ENRON blew the door off that for a Little while, as has other scandals. However, the rich have a well-oiled machine in place to keep the works hidden. By the way where is Ken Lay?

7. So far the TV coverage here in Japan has focused on the ferocity of the

hurricane and has courteously refrained from making this glaring observation. I don't know about the print media, though, since I cannot read newspapers.

However, I am quite sure that the sick truth will sink in... that the reality of the U.S. is quite different from the image projected abroad by "Friends" and "Maid in Manhattan."
