because we already have found out the hard way that when disaster hits, we are on our own.

Last year after 3 hurricanes, the only National Guard or FEMA people I saw were two NG's walking into an open Subway for lunch days after the storm hit. What a joke.

Time to make emergency packs. I'm not in a major disaster area and even I'm considering filling a trunk in the basement with enough supplies and water to last a week at the very least.

Then also for us to make a list of what we'd need to grab and pack if we had to get out of dodge fast.

7. It's called a "Bug Out" kit

There are plenty of sites on the net that can describe what goes in one. You want to keep it fairly small. I keep it stored in a back-pack in my closet. Mine is packed in a 1 gal zip lock bag and includes many necessary articles for survival, including a rain proof tarp that can be made into a lean-to type tent.

I was thinking of using my old canvas army bag and putting in a few basics like flashlight, first aid kit, water, etc.

Also though I was thinking about a list of things you can't have prepared, like my wife's weddding dress, our wedding album, family heirlombs etc. Things we just wouldn't want to leave behind but we couldn't prepack...like the cat. :)

14. Add this to you bug out kit. A fire box for your papers.

A fire box with your REALLY important papers. You can get them at Wal-Mart, cost is about $30 to $50, depending on size. It is a fire resistant box designed to keep your truly important stuff safe through a fire.

By keeping them in such a box, then you can grab the box and go. Or, if you leave it, it will likely survive the disaster to be recovered later, unless looters grab it.

- I keep about 1 week of food and water in my home at all times. I've been without power that long after hurricane Isabelle and was once snowed in for 6 days before I could get plowed out.

No one should ever depend upon another for their own survival and the very first line of defense is preparation at home.

Enough to last a couple of weeks. Medical supplies of all kinds, including what she might need to deal with traumas associated with such an event.

You cannot rely on your government to save you, from the environment or the aftermath.

This week, I probably bo out to my my first gun. I can't live in a community where the vast majority of the population hunts and is armed (Fargo, ND) and be unable to protect my family.

on a short list with terrorist attack on NYC and hurricane hitting NO as the most likely disasters our country would have to face, I would be planning to move ASAP if I lived there.
