No confirmation for Roberts...This is Bush's out for Roe v. Wade
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 10:59 AM by CanOfWhoopAss
He is slapping Scalia, Thomas and Kennedy in the face. They gave Bush his job and no one else. They have spent years on the court and a 2 year appellate court judge walks over them to become Chief Justice? He has to get two anti-choice judges confirmed for the wingnuts. If he can't get Roberts confirmed he can tell the wingnuts he did everything to force his confirmation including nominating him Chief Justice.

If Roberts is confirmed and Scalia and more likely Kennedy turn against him to uphold Roe. He can claim sour grapes.

Doesn't the newest justice have to do all the menial tasks? If the newest justice is cj does this mean that Breyer remains low man on the totem pole??

If Congress votes to confirm him as CJ then vote every yea voter (Dems too) out of office. You can't confirm a CJ with no judicial opinions trail and all of his other documents being withheld.

2. Scalia is old, and Thomas is black.
Better to put up the stepford nominee for chief justice.

6. Bush isn't really biting that challenge.
After all, he said he wanted to rebuild racist Trent Lott's house and sip lemonade on his porch. Message: I don't care.

7. Could you imagine if a repuke nominated the first Black CJ after
having already nominated the first woman SCJ? You are right though he won't bite.

14. if roberts is a f*ck up, he is Chief f*ckup for the next 40 years
How do you confirm someone as CJ without a fight who is that young. At least Scalia could be replaced by a Dem if elected. Of course the repukes thought of this already so you are right.

3. Yes, you can.
Earl Warren went from Governor of California to Chief Justice. Most of the Chief Justices have been directly appointed to the position.

8. Absolutely, but sadly
I doubt Roberts will bring any wonderful surprises to the bench like Earl Warren did. My, my, what a shock Eisenhower had when he found out what he got with Warren. Can you say buyer's remorse? LOL

9. He is trying to regain his base, who are deserting him in droves
The idiots who vote FOR him, against THEIR OWN SELF INTEREST--you know, those poorer and lower middle class fundies (who think one day they COULD be rich, maybe, if they pray hard enough)--are starting to realize that if the flood comes, he will not be there to help them.

This is an effort to keep them in the fold. Sure, I may not haul you out of your attic if the flood waters are at your neck, but hey, no brazen harlots will be getting abortions after your dead bloated body is scooped up and laid in the ground!!!! Ain't that swell???

As for the Chief Justice, it is not always a promoted slot. Many CJs have come in from the outside.

This has everything to do with the Chimp trying to keep his little ignorant minions in line...they are starting to see something "unchristian" in his FAILURE TO LEAD in NOLA.

Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 11:42 AM by ellenfl
to replace the conservative rehnquist, not the moderate o'connor. MAYBE, since he really doesn't want to overturn roe, the next candidate will be more moderate. just a thought (hope).

13. Roberts for CJ is Probably a Positive Thing
because, as repugnant as he may be, he can't be worse than Rehnquist was, so it may be a wash. If Bush then nominates anyone but a moderate to replace O'Connor, the Dems. in the Senate can really go after that person.

17. Roberts is sailing
There's no tide of opposition to him in the Senate. He'll get confirmed with a comfortable margin.
