FEMA is refusing to collect the dead bodies that they see....
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 12:23 PM by rainbow4321
saying that the military has morgue unit that does that...per local scanner.

FEMA is also trying to pull put out the local first responders...the responder (firefighter) on the scanner is saying his guys are refusing to leave..they have had a few deserters and they are worried that FEMA pulling the rest out will "totally deplete them".

There seems to be alot of "frustration" over 2 large FEMA groups showing up just now..least that is what the local responders are saying.

I did put this in the scanner thread but the thought of FEMA people just letting the bodies float by for someone to get "later" is disgraceful.

Oh--and the Secret Service is down there, also...cop said "The Secret Service wants to talk to that guy"

Trying to take them to The Belmont (?)..except the people trying to herd them on the bus are getting pissed because the firefighters are getting into their own private vehicles.

So are we seeing the beginning of chimp's people trying to get everyone out of the city except chimp's useless thugs??

21. Hello! They are part of the Dept. of the Treasury -
- and I would think that there are probably a few banks and financial institutions in NO that are under water and abandoned and are susceptible to crime, looting, theft of credit card info and other bank related papers that could lead to further fraud, etc.

From Secret Service website:

The Secret Service was established as a law enforcement agency in 1865. While most people associate the Secret Service with Presidential protection, our original mandate was to investigate the counterfeiting of U.S. currency--which we still do. Today our primary investigative mission is to safeguard the payment and financial systems of the United States. This has been historically accomplished through the enforcement of the counterfeiting statutes to preserve the integrity of United States currency, coin and financial obligations. Since 1984, our investigative responsibilities have expanded to include crimes that involve financial institution fraud, computer and telecommunications fraud, false identification documents, access device fraud, advance fee fraud, electronic funds transfers, and money laundering as it relates to our core violations.

And the Secret Service is charged with protecting the Treasury Department. If you look at your paper currency, you may have some bills stamped from the New Orleans branch of the Federal Reserve.

30. Feds wanting to declare Marshall Law
The repugs always seem to think 3 steps ahead when it comes to saving their sorry political asses. I keep thinking that part of the reason the feds were pushing the governor to declare marshall law is so that when the time came, they could bar the media from viewing the recovery effort and essentially "sanitize" what will obviously be a sad, gruesome testament to this administration's incompetence. Just like the flag draped coffins that arrive weekly from Iraq.

18. There is a thread that is put up a few times a day
here in GD, some DUer's transcribe what is being broadcast on FEMA scanner/local NO scanners. The scanner broadcast provides UNfiltered info from the ground, as opposed to what is in the MSM. Once the thread has like 100 or more posts, someone usually starts a "part 2" thread.

Here is Monday's thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4641501&mesg_id=4641501

Here is a website with the scanner links.

Scroll down to the "Live Feeds of Public Safety Communications".
Windows Media Player or something similiar will let you listen live.

I was listening to it earlier using Windows Media Player then it suddenly stopped and I couldnt get it going again. Eventually I tried another app called FOOBAR 2000 which is what I am using right now.

Try conenctiong thru this page:

http://www.radioreference.com:8080

Its the top feed.

The left ear is an air frequency and appears to be mostly helicopter traffic, and the right ear is the feed I am mostly listening too - it seems to be the main command net with what are called the "EOC's" on it whcih I am thinking means "emergency operation centres".

One of the EOC's appears to be the one that the Jefferson Parsih President who was on MTP is at.

This is a fascinating feed, I hope you can get it.

28. FEMA is slowly taking over everything...
The local responders said on the scanner that they were "frustrated by the 2 large groups of FEMA" people that showed up this morning.

The MSM may be portraying this as being all rosey, but there is definite tension between these 2 groups. The terse firefughter I heard this morning was giving the FEMA person hell when the firefighter found out FEMA was trying to pull out the local first responders.

32. Are you on the LSP Baton Rouge feed?
I have heard some pretty disturbing things on this feed including people being admonished for failing to maintain radio discipline for complaining about things happening.

Having listened for so long I am starting to get a feel for the structure of this "net" (they call this signals intelligence in the military :) )

But one thing I have noticed over the last few days is that what was once dominated by civillians is now dominated by military.

By the way, I just heard about that Infantry commander who wants to meet Nagin - suppsoedly to "coordinate efforts here".

The question I have is why is an INFANTRY commander now seemingly in command? I know that about 6 hours ago I heard one unit say they were converting from a SAR role to a law enforcement role.

Someone else said "does that mean you are gonnae force people out" and the guy said "yes sir the orders are that the entire area is to be completely evacuated"

35. The thing is, WHY is it an INFANTRY commander?
Why isnt this commander under that General who is in charge of Joint Task Force Katrina - Gen Honore?

In other words, why is this guy who commands combat troops talking directly to the mayor rather than going thru the chain of command - unless that chain has changed, and the combat troops are now in charge?

I dunno it's freaky.

38. I am...
and on CNN today there was one NO resident who said that the NG were loading people up on a bus...at GUNPOINT. So that kinda confirms what you heard about forcing people out.

One of the elderly men convinced an Alabama NG soldier to let him stay..so the guy on who was speaking on CNN was "allowed" to stay and take care of the elderly guy.
He made it sound as if there is still an entire neighborhood of people still there in the NO 9th ward. He's going around picking random medicine bottles up off the ground and collecting them in case the people still there need them at some point.

There is an "important meeting" tonight that is supposed to happen tonight, per the scanner today for the local responders who are there. The official said that the local responders need to be "rehabbed" but that they have to make time for this meeting.

The people on the scanner loosen up a bit around midnight or so..guess they figure they are being monitered less late at night?

45. NO = one big huge toxic waste DUMP
There were also warnings of new dangers. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said he had received a report from Biloxi, Miss., of dysentery - a painful, sometimes-fatal intestinal disease that causes dehydration. With hot weather, mosquitos and standing water holding human waste, corpses and other contaminants, diseases such as West Nile virus, hepatitis A, salmonella and E. coli bacteria infections also are a concern, he said on CNN.

"We have the ingredients for a bad situation there," Leavitt said.

Hundreds of federal health officers and nearly 100 tons of medical supplies and antibiotics were being delivered to the Gulf Coast to try to head off the problem. Federal authorities were also considering how to combat the growing mosquito population - including spraying the sewage-filled floodwaters.

Local officials have already predicted the storm's death toll would reach into the thousands. Without putting a precise figure on it, the federal government agreed Sunday.

"I think it's evident it's in the thousands," Leavitt said.

Chertoff wouldn't make a prediction but said it's likely an untold number will be found dead in swamped homes, temporary shelters where many went for days without food or water, or even in the streets once the waters are finally drained from New Orleans. Removing the water could take a month or more.

46. Get the live bodies first!
If they are passing over dead bodies in order to save live people then I say go ahead. But at some point somebody is going to have to get the dead bodies.

I read reports from the Dallas Morning News from 1900 about the Galveston hurricane. By the time they go around to cleaning up the dead bodies they were having to scoop them up with shovels with bourbon soaked handkerchiefs coverning the workers' faces.

48. Sadly,
I am not sure things are going much better now than they did during the Galveston destruction in 1900.

I don't live down there but the chills one gets from watching "The Great Storm" video they show at one of the tourist sites take a long, long time to shake off.

Citizens were forced to set the dead bodies on fire..at gunpoint. Because the bodies that they threw out to the sea were washed BACK to the island. No food was given out to abled body men unless they were helping out with cleaning/rebuilding the city. Looking at the chaos we have today with FEMA, today's feds should be hanging their head in shame...and the Galveston people from back then are probably in the afterlife shaking their heads in disbelief.

If they rebuilt Galveston from the storm back THEN (with less resources), then there is no excuse for not rebuilding NOLA even better than it was before.
