# Shelters – More than 470 Red Cross shelters are open in 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee and Utah, with many more on standby. The Red Cross also is coordinating with other agencies, the mass sheltering operation at the Houston Astrodome, and is working with local partners to find additional facilities in which thousands of evacuees will find a safe, clean and comfortable environment..

The numbers keep changing because they're sending people to other states. Texas said yesterday that they can only handle 200,000. They're coming all the way to WV and Ohio:

Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas have accepted West Virginia's offer to help relocate victims of Hurricane Katrina. Sunday morning, six West Virginia Air National Guard airplanes left Charleston's Yeager airport for New Orleans. The victims are given food, blankets and medical attention and are temporarily given shelter in the eastern part of the state. In the meantime West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin declared Sunday a statewide day of prayer for Katrina's victims. Saturday night 83 victims were on that first plane that landed in West Virginia. On the plane were 53 men, 20 women and nine children. The plane carried the first of approximately five hundred victims who are coming to this area.
