Isn't Roberts kinda underqualified?
All politics aside, have we ever had a chief justice who'd hardly spent any time on the bench before?

Anyone know their history?

3. He has about as much experience as Brown had before being
put in charge of FEMA. Qualifications mean nothing to Bush.

20. That may sound like a joke to you, but
in Bushworld, it's no less than the reality. Your professional potential virtually knows no bounds. Your parents sure would be proud of you... if they were neocons, anyway.

14. You don't even have to have a law degree
to be on the Supreme Court. Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to have read that somewhere. So if that is true then Roberts is certainly "qualified" by the virtue of being alive and human.

Still he hasn't had much judicial experience but for Bush that is a good thing since there is little "paper trail."

What I find interesting about this is the timing. I really wonder if this move would have happened if it had not been for the hurricane. This nomination of Roberts to Chief Justice sure has diverted some attention away from BushCo's inept handling of the hurricane disaster.

Nominating Scalia wouldn't have caused much talk. That was expected, really. Roberts on the other hand is sure to get the pundits focus off of Katrina.

THis has Rove's fingerprints all over it because it once again deflects the focus and puts the Deomcrats on the defensive.

16. His mentor, Rehnquist, had...
... no judicial experience at all before nomination. Lewis Powell had spent his entire life as a corporate lawyer.

So, having a couple of years on the court of appeals is not the least experience of prior nominees.

Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 01:55 PM by Fescue4u
Obviously Roberts is Bushys kinda of guy. I dont think anyone would argu that.

1st, The younger the chief justice is, the longer they'll serve and hence the longer the mark the president gets to make on the court. By Choosing an existing Justice who is already getting up in years, would ensure that he won't serve nearly as long as a freshly minted Justice.

2nd, By doing its this way, its almost a 3 for 2 deal. Bush gets to appoint the Chief Justice, and fill 2 vacancys, hence 3 impacts with two appointments.
