Josh Marshall: Plame-like disinformation being fed to media on Blanco?
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2005_09_04.php#006418

As noted, the Washington Post got burned today by a "senior Bush official" who told them that Gov. Blanco of Louisiana had never declared a state of emergency in the site -- a claim the Post printed as fact. Yet the claim was demonstrably false and by late afternoon the Post had been compelled to print a correction.

This week's Newsweek contains the same false claim -- and though their recital of the anecdote is unsourced, common sense suggests that someone or some operation fed them both the same line, which neither organization checked out before running.

Monday's Times, not surprisingly, confirms that the White House damage control operation is being run by Karl Rove and Dan Bartlett.

Add it up.

And who will report this out?

1. None of them!
They are all spineless wimps. Letting these guys do this to them yet again will confirm it. I would like to be pleasantly surprised, but I doubt I will be.

2. I don't get why Bartlett, Rove, et al. still have credibility w the Post
or any jounalistic org. If I was a reporter and Karl Rove or one of his merry elves called me, I would pretty much say -- "Sorry, I don't trust you -- 99.9888888888% of the stuff that comes out of your mouth is BS lies."

3. One would hope the BS will eventually backfire.
Editors usually hate having to print retractions because it makes them look stupid.

5. Amazing how no one is talking about the national guard. I think
an extra 5000 soldiers on Monday or Tuesday would have made a big difference in a lot of things. Especially if they had all their equipment like helicopters. The Coast Guard sure did a good job though. But not enough of them.

Amazing how the navy came in from the water TODAY to bring supplies to those in Mississippi.

20. Fears have been realized
"The right fix is to fire the person who led to 3,000 people dying by making
bad calls," Van Auken said. "That is the right fix. We have the wrong fixes
in place."

"We fought for the commission so we could have a full accounting of how
the attacks could have happened and why they weren't prevented,"
Breitweiser said. "This goes to show that all of our efforts and energies
trying to make the nation safer by having the independent commission give
a full accounting to the American people were futile."

"There are no words to describe our disappointment in our personal
sacrifice getting that commission up and running and in the promises that
were made to us that we would have the real 9/11 story told," Van Auken
said. "None of that has come to pass and that is very sad."

9. You know - I love Mike Malloy but usually I can't listen to him - usually
his anger is too raw, I can't work with it. But with all the shit they are pulling, while people are STILL DYING I think I'll listen in tonight. I hope it's not a rerun.

"Have I told you today how much I hate these people?" keeps running through my mind.

11. IMPORTANT: They changed FEMA website to corroborate story
then changed it back!

I posted a thread the other day that showed a web page on FEMA, where they display the Initial Notices of Disaster. Louisiana's had disappeared! But I had a cached copy and I posted it here (after a DU'er told me how - thanks ) But, it was back on the site a day or so later, and the moderators rolled my post into the LIHOP thread when they consolidated it. In the meantime, I renamed the photo file, so the new LIHOP thread didn't show it, and I didn't much care, because the Notice was back on FEMA's site anyway.

NOW I can guess WHY someone doctored the FEMA site! It just seemed odd at the time, since it didn't STAY gone, it reappeared, unchanged.

Is it possible that it disappeared briefly, about the time the papers would be validating their source, then reappeared later? By the time Blanco's office went looking for it, it would be back, and the media would scratch their heads and post a correction. Nobody reads corrections anyway, though, and the damage would be done.

Note that the "doctored" page has no date at the bottom under "last updated".

Am I paranoid, or insightful? Whaddayathink?

Here's the original page:

then the "temporary" page:

and now, if you go to the website, you'll find the original page again.

13. No, I just thought it ODD, not criminal, since it reappeared.
Who do you think I should tell first? Actually, FIRST I want anyone else who cached it to GO FIND IT and save it.

18. Send it to the Lousiana delegation for sure.
I think Louise Slaughter and John Conyers would be interested in this as well.

22. I don't know if it's criminal. It could be an "honest mistake"
of some kind. Or it could be FEMA doing Rove's bidding. It sure is weird. I'm sending it around today. It deserves some spotlight shone on it.

19. Not just their slow response -- They prevented others from responding!
The photo-ops and PR spin are disgusting enough.
But these people ACTIVELY PREVENTED rescue and relief efforts!
