CBS News: FEMA kicked old women in wheelchairs out of room
CBS News - White male hurricane victim reports they and old woman in wheelchair were kicked out of their hotel rooms (I think Baton Rouge) so FEMA teams could have hotel rooms.

1. I would not doubt this for one minute...
The FEMA officials in charge seem to be TRYING to undermine all of the operations to rescue or help evacuees...

2. FEMA continues to make a joke out of helping the victims of Katrina
All the top department officials from the Head of Homeland Security and FEMA need to be fired so these indignities stop.

3. Can we get a date on when this occurred?
Blanco put out an executive order that hotels/motels can't kick out evacuees for non-evacuees. I'm not kidding.

6. Then the hotel/motel violated the executive order.
Can FEMA commandeer those rooms and supercede the executive order?

7. Here is the executive order prohibiting this
Executive Order No. KBB 2005-24

Emergency Occupation of Hotel and Motel Rooms

(pdf file)

http://gov.louisiana.gov/2005%20Executive%20orders/24EmergencyHotelOccupation.pdf

SECTION 1: All evacuees occupying a room shall be allowed to
continue to occupy such rooms under the normal terms,
conditions, and rates of the hotel or motel.

SECTION 2: No evacuee shall be replaced by a non-evacuee as long
as the evacuee currently occupying the room is able
to pay the nightly rates, including applicable taxes,
or is able to guarantee payment through appropriate
insurance coverage or by the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA).

SECTION 3: The attorney general, state police, and local
governmental authorities are authorized to ensure
compliance with this Order for the amount of time the
state of Louisiana remains in a state of emergency

11. In-fucking-credible!
I think it is section 2 that spells it out:

SECTION 2: No evacuee shall be replaced by a non-evacuee as long
as the evacuee currently occupying the room is able
to pay the nightly rates, including applicable taxes,
or is able to guarantee payment through appropriate
insurance coverage or by the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA).

I guess FEMA decided they wouldn't guarantee payment unless they were the ones occupying the rooms.

the executive order.

8. FEMA Loves Mini-Vans
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 06:33 PM by Submariner
I was in Puerto Rico just as hurricane Georges departed, and I got my Hertz rental mini-van for the next 3 weeks of work. A few days into the rental I got a call from Hertz to return the mini-van immediately since FEMA was absconding with EVERY rental mini-van on the island.

I told Hertz I needed it for my work, but they would have none of that and would levee a penalty if I was not back in 12 hours. As it turns out, mini-vans became the favorite target of carjackers knowing the FEMA guy had a wad of cash and a laptop computer to be jacked.

I would LOVE to have the link so i could include that in a letter to the editor. Im a little different then the BUSH BOTS in that i like to make sure my stories are true, although why should i doubt that a FEMA scum would care about a poor white OR black person.

14. Entergy kicked out some folks in a hotel here...
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 06:48 PM by AbbyR
We ran into a family of five or six staying in a hotel room here in Dumas, Ark. They were in a hotel in Baton Rouge, but were kicked out so Entergy workers could move in. Could it be standard procedure?

15. Third Amendment?
Could some "activist" judge construe FEMA to be soldiers? If so time to shake about 150 years of dust off of the third amendment (no quartering of soldiers in time of peace, we haven't declared war on Louisiana have we?)

Every thread I open there is another horror story of someone less fortunate being exploited & abused by someone better off.

I didn't have much faith in humanity to start with & these bloodsuckers behavior is not making it any better.

20. I listened to that on the scanner
They had a convoy of FEMA people coming in and apparently it was more than the hotel had rooms for. It sounded like one of the State Police was at the hotel acting as liason. After about half an hour he radioed the convoys escort that the hotel had made room for the full contingent.

All the while some person they referred to as "Code" (means his name can't be used on airwaves) kept a chopper pilot cooling his heels on a rooftop in Baton Rouge for a good while, at least an hour. The pilot was getting irritated, saying he had more important things to be doing and wanted to leave. "Code" apparently didn't care and they kept him on the roof. It is almost a certainty that "Code" was Brown, FEMA director.
