PHOTOS: SWAT teams bursting into homes now!!!!!

Leonard Thomas, 23, cries after a SWAT team burst into the flooded home he and his family were living in on Monday, Sept. 5, 2005. Neighbors had reported that they were squatting in the house in the wake of Hurricane Katrina but the authorities left after his family proved they owned the house. Some rescuers are not taking any more food and water to those who have decided to stay in an effort to force them out. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer)

THIS is more important than saving him?......

Or saving them?......

Or THEM?????????????? (breaking my heart)

1. I read that..
.. Nagin ordered that no more food and water business.

What is wrong with these leaders? Are they drinking the wrong water, like Bush. It must be contagious.

I find that difficult to believe. I know FEMA would not let the Red Cross into NO for that very reason but have not read anything stating that Nagin has ordered this.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans is getting tough with people who are still refusing to leave the hurricane-ravaged city.

Mayor Ray Nagin says water will no longer be handed out to people who refuse to leave.

Despite evacuations, rescues and relief efforts, Deputy Police Chief W-J Riley says some people still don't want to leave their homes while others are hanging back to take part in looting and other criminal activity.

State police are using force to get some to move. A SWAT team, armed with rifles, confronted two brothers at their home in the Uptown section of New Orleans, leaving one sobbing.

One officer says the team tried to make sure that the two men understood that food and water is becoming scarce and that disease could begin spreading.

26. That's a tough question of 'enabling' vs. 'supporting.'
It can't be a question of money, I don't think. Surely the resources required to rescue, transport, feed, and shelter would make it a wash.

I really don't know what I'd do. There are values to be considered in both ways. Another moral dilemma I'd say. I think most of us (DUers) would do well to brush up on the conundrum of moral dilemmas. Most authoritarian organizations are good at evading moral dilemmas -- since we can just do what we're told to do. :eyes:

Lila: An Inquiry into Morals by Robert Pirsig (sequel to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance) is a good study of what morals are and how to best to interpret them...

from Lila:

"The highest morality of all is the creation of space for life to move onward"

I would expect neighbors to know they lived there. Even if they didn't, why would neighbors report them?

The man crying. Hadn't he already been through more than enough?

10. The latest I heard
was that Nagin was THREATENING that at some point stragglers, those who refused to leave, would not be provisioned.

Do you have a source that says this is currently happening?

15. Sometimes you have to play hardball to get results
I'm quite certain that Nagin doesn't want to see anymore of his constituents die but if they are refusing to leave, he has to do something to try to get them to leave. Would you rather he have the National Guard go in and forcibly remove these people, 'cause that's the only other option.

22. What makes you think the guy on the van was not rescued?
Or the people who wrote on the roof? How do you asssume they are unrescued?

On breaking doors down. We are seeing a lot of that on the news. The are searching all the houses to find everyone they can. Some people are too weak to come to the door, so they have to go in to search if no one answers.

About the dogs. Yes, it is more important to rescue people than dogs.

Once they knew that he didn't want to go, they let him stay.

About the water. If someone stays, then you are wanting the police to make a regular water run for him, when they could be searching for and rescuing someone else.

Those who want to stay have had their chance and must now be left on their own, unless they want to leave.

Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 09:26 PM by Bluebear
I assume the were not rescued because those pictures are from TODAY. And search and rescue has been called off for the night. Why do you assume they are saved?

On breaking down doors: the news story states that neighbors said this man was a squatter. Now you insist that they are searching 'all the houses to find everyone they can'. Which is the true version?

About the dogs: yes, I love dogs so sue me. If a speedboat goes by that could bring them to dry land, what is the harm?

I am not wanting the police to make water runs and I didn't say anywhere in the post that I thing people should stay. I think this is a toxic place and everyone should leave. But that is not the version of the story. This man is crying because he was terrified by the police. Thanks for letting me clarify.

27. Because they thought they were "squatters"
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 11:43 PM by incapsulated
Not because they refused to leave when requested to. Not because they were harming anyone. Not even because they were actively looting.

Because they might be "squatting" in a house surrounded by toxic water in the middle of a flood where people are still dying waiting to be rescued.

A fucking swat team.

What possible fucking imminent danger did these people pose to anyone, EVEN IF THE STORY WAS TRUE? They could have been "squatting" there waiting for some fucking help for all they knew.

I can't take any more.
