3. Deamonte is a hero!
A six year old is a better leader and saved more lives than some adults. The poor babies. :(

I just don't understand why he was left to fend for himself without supervision and care. They evacuated him. Did they just dump him in a shelter?

He was carrying his 5 month old baby and looked after three other toddlers. What a hero!

7. Much worse than that. They dumped them on a flooded causeway.
In the sun, without shade, food, water, or a way out. I'd ask what were those chopper rescue team members thinking, but I don't think there was any thought given to this, at all.

24. It was under the original headline on Yahoo News
If you didn't know the story behind the headline, you would've missed it, so... It would've been hard for you to find. Besides, this kid did such a great job that he deserves two Greatest threads! :applause:

14. I am inspired by this child and full of rage for these "rescuers"...
This child is an amazing, remarkable little kid. What an uplifting story.

I felt hope as I read the beginning of the article, but then hope turned to rage as I read about how the kids and parents were separated.

The helicopter didn't have room for the kids and parents, so they told the kids to climb aboard. They assured the parents that they would be back for them. They never came back. Then, they dump these kids somewhere, unsupervised.

I cannot even IMAGINE being that parent!!!! Your child would be gone...and you wait and wait and wait for the helicopter that never makes it back.

How in the f*ck does that happen?????????????

That is just awful...and so terrifying!!!

26. Beautiful
"The 6-year-old spoke for all of them, and he told rescuers his name was Deamonte Love."

That's funny.

"The helicopter never returned. The kids went flown to Baton Rouge, and the parents ended up in Texas."

That's not.

28. What's amazing is the mother was found in a shelter
yet they dumped this kid onto a bridge in the middle of the day with no food, water or someone to look after him. It's like a surreal episode of the Rugrats...

29. Seven children found wandering together
Seven children found wandering together
By The Associated Press
Monday September 05, 2005

BATON ROUGE, La. -- In the chaos that was Causeway Boulevard, this group of refugees stood out: a 6-year-old boy walking down the road, holding a 5-month-old, surrounded by five toddlers who followed him around as if he were their leader.

They were holding hands. Three of the children were about 2 years old, and one was wearing only diapers. A 3-year-old girl, who wore colorful barrettes on the ends of her braids, had her 14-month-old brother in tow. The 6-year-old spoke for all of them, and he told rescuers his name was Deamonte Love.

SNIP

So far, parents displaced by flooding have reported 220 children missing, but that number is expected to rise, said Mike Kenner of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which will help reunite families. With crowds churning at evacuation points, many children were parted from their parents accidentally; one woman handed her baby up onto a bus, turned around to pick up her suitcase and turned back to find that the bus had left.

34. Great story. Great kid. Bet his momma is relieved and proud.
I figured families were getting separated and how scary for them and difficult it could be to reunite them. Good to see a story with a happy ending. At least the families are together again.

35. Next time a repug tells me "they should have evacuated:
I'll point out that while one 6 year did a great job, most of the children didn't have cabfare!

When I heard this story earlier, I was both furious and elated. A few got out.

he certainly can't do any worse than those running it now . . . and would likely do a whole lot better . . .

what an incredible kid! . . . if he were anywhere near me, I'd give him the biggest hug he ever saw . . .
