I would not leave New Orleans either.

If it were at all possible, hubbie & I would stay too.

True enough, some people may not understand the consequenses of staying. I have a feeling, though, that many do.

Most, though, I believe know that the federal government wants to take their land/house. Fuck that. For those of us who work hard to own a small piece of Americana, it is not something that would be easy to walk away from----especially when all indications are that you will never again be able to own anything again.

I am an LPN. I understand about the health risks. I'm just saying that if Mr zola & I lived in NO, we would probably be amongst those who refuse to leave.

I believe the real question becomes: Do you believe one word out of GWB's mouth? If GW says go, I am most certain the best course of action is to stay.

3. I celebrate the people who want to stay
It seems, though, that chimp wants them out.

6. I understand people dont want to leave the few things they own
but the medical teams over there seem guenuinely concerned about the risks of epidemics because of the infected water, ...

It is easy for us to say they should stay, but, if an epidemic of cholera starts in NO, we will be the first ones to blame the Bush administration for not having done anything.

This said, I heard Jackson speak today and he had really good points about the fact that these people should not have to go to far so that they can be first in line when the reconstruction jobs will occur.

11. Some risk of disease is real
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 12:25 AM by me b zola
What if you don't have any children? Hubbie & I don't. We live for the day and what we feel is important.

I am an LPN. I do know what health risks are there. I also know as a human what risks exists from giving GWB what he wants.

I am not advocating that everyone should stay. I am advocating that anyone who *wants* to stay should be allowed to stay.

5. It has been one hell of a learning curve, eh?
But experience has shown us. If the bastard king wants something, we should perk our ears and fight against it.

I don't trust one frikin thing about him or what he wants!!!!

9. Oh, I do understand your point
But if you were to know us...as in come into our home & know us....you would know I am not blowing out my ass.

It is a mind frame. And although at this point in time we are middle class, both of us have been poor. We have both been with out. We give great credence to owning a piece of something and defending that something.

No flames for you asking, it is an appropriate question. But you just gotta know us. :hi:

7. I'd stay too. These people are trying to hold onto their lives.
This is all they have. They fear, and rightly, that leaving will end up in relinquishment of their rights to their property. Martial law is all about that, historically.

10. Reality
Most of these houses under water will be declared unsafe anyway and they'll have to leave. This happened in Andrew, it happened at my house and my house was still intact and they condemned it. Took a awhile to get it uncondemned too but these people don't have the resources for that. And I think just by looking at the scene that for the most part it should be condemned. Those house have been sitting in water as deep as 10 feet for a week. Who know what kind of structural damage that has already happened not to mention the damage yet to occur from rot and the like.

12. And that is why I say if it were at all possible
Most of these people who owned their own homes never will again. There is so much at stake here.

I understand your point, and it is valid. But many homes are safe, and their owners are fighting to keep what is theirs...knowing that they may never have another chance to own their own home again.

13. I'm sure there are many homes still safe
And those houses will still be there. The owners won't if they fall to disease and we already have reports of disease spreading and it will continue to spread even after the water is gone because of you got misquitos running rampant, you've got animals all over the place. It's just not safe to be there at all.

14. Most of these people have homes that are dry. Look at their choices:
their own home without running water (they can get generators) or go to a gigantic shelter, sleep on a cot, wait for the insurance check (which these people won't get because there is nothing wrong with their homes), and start an uncertain future probably with no money. Not much of a choice. I would probably stay too. Not if my house was wet, but dry makes it a lot easier. The health risks are probably a lot less in the dry zone. Sounds like a lot of the business owners are staying, so they should be able to get some things to keep them going. And they probably have friends around too. Can you imagine spending months in the Astro Dome?

15. I don't blame them.
A person who works for years and years at low wages only to end up with next to nothing may not easily part with what little they do have even if it's a mess. Especially older people who don't have time left to start over from scratch even if they had someplace to go.
