1. OH! I thought at first you meant a DUer from the West Coast named Shep
Smith is on David Letterman. I was like, hey, isn't that the name of the FOX News guy?

3. He's the Fox News reporter/anchor, who went off right-wing script during
Katrina coverage ... apparently slammed Sean Hannity on air for not pushing for the gov't to do more for the people down there (I didn't see it; perhaps others can elucidate). Watch him now, while he still has a job.

10. He's a repug reporter who graduated from Ole Miss

I wanted to puke when I saw his book for sale in our campus book store. His book looked like a total Hannity rip off, conservative "values" type of book.

But he has slightly redeemed himself so I'll claim him as my fellow alumni.

5. Did he have any criticism at all of the federal govt. or FEMA?
I missed most of it.
Thanks for the heads up.

7. No. The outrage is gone. "Plenty of blame to pass around, later."
Red Cross can't go in for "security reasons," and so on.

And Letterman seems just as happy to let the blame be shared equally with local government.

8. How awful. I have a better idea. Let's pass the blame NOW onto those
who prevented rescue and relief from getting to the victims.
Whenever there is a natural disaster like this, the Red Cross ALWAYS goes in.
How can anyone not question that "security reasons" bunk?
Aaarrrrgggghhh!!!

Thanks for the update, Ojai Person

12. Letterman asked him how people could not have been prepared for this..
the possibility of it. Smith said " the FEDERAL government had a CAT 5 hurricane hitting NOLA as their 3rd worst disaster scenario for years" and that the "Army Corps of Engineers had known for years that a hurricane greater than a CAT 3 could break the levees." He talked abt old & sick people & babies sitting on the interpass w/o food & water for days and not understanding how none could have been dropped to them, since news agencies, including theirs, were pleading on national TV to do something for them. One of them brought up the absurdity of trucks being turned away by FEMA that had brought water or provisions to the SuperDome.

His comment abt barbour was in the context of going to a website where people could aid Mississippi, which he noted had stopped being covered because NOLA continued to get worse, but also was in need of help. He mentioned a web site haleybarbour.org or something. He said nothing abt barbour.

One of them said he did not understand how this happened in America. He wasn't screaming, but he also isn't a screamer on his show. He did not sound like he was supporting his corporate masters to me at all. He sounded emotionally drained.

13. I like the sound of that much better.
Some wondered if that segment of Smith's from NOLA would end his career with Faux.
At this point, I can't understand why he would stay with that criminal accomplice network.

6. Thanks, and kudos to Smith for telling a bit of truth and to Letterman.

(edit to add the text)

He doesn't seem to have much of a clue about the "benign neglect" behind the lack of response, but he has the honesty to at least tell what he saw.

9. Hey, Tyranny!
You posted about him last week and got slammed by a lot of people. I don't like Fox much myself but I watched all his reports he did on the people on the overpass. I don't know what have happened to them if it wasn't for him. He did good on Letterman.
:hi:

11. Hiya! Suich
:hi: I got slammed for bringing up alot of things like when I was concerned about the safey of the superdome another DU'er actually told me "Shit Happens" or when I brough up that will starve and die I believe someone told me that I was full of shit, although it was only a few DU'ers it was very stressful to deal with.

I even got slammed for watching this tragedy on FOX news someone had the nerve to call me RW shill for watching them, but I had a choice either watch the real human toll on that channel or watch Wolf Blitzer bitch and moan about looting and I chose FOX news although I didnt watch it all day I did watch it because at that time they were the only good source for info but now that the propragam machine is in force again I won't watch them although if I'm flipping though the channel and happen to see them actually reporting I will watch.
