4. Cholera:
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 12:06 PM by Tyranny_R_US
Cholera (also called Asiatic cholera) is an infectious disease of the gastrointestinal tract caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium. These bacteria are typically ingested by drinking water contaminated by improper sanitation or by eating improperly cooked fish, especially shellfish. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and dehydration. Death is generally due to the dehydration caused by the illness. When left untreated cholera generally has a high mortality rate. Treatment is typically an aggressive rehydration regimen usually delivered intravenously, which continues until the diarrhea ceases. With treatment, mortality rates plummet. Cholera was first described in a scientific manner by the physician Garcia de Orta in the 16th century.

17. Cholera bacteria has to be present in the environment according to doctors
on pbs story this morning. This does not seem to be the case in US. Much more likely to be dysentery. Reporters just love to panic the people!

18. The conditions in New Orleans would be ideal
for spreading ANY diarheal illness, including cholera, but also including any of the other more common but less dangerous bacterial and viral causes.

The thing is, the bug has to be present in the first place in order for it to be spread, and Vibrio Cholera is extremely rare in the USA.

It's wise for the medical types to be on the lookout for the possibility of a cholera outbreak, since the conditions for its spread are ideal, and the consequences of the disease are so serious.

But it's way too soon for us here at DU to go into full "Cholera! OMG!!!" mode. No one has diagnosed it yet.

Not even Dr. Frist.

23. Cholera, e. coli ... many more have yet to be seen
What has been coined as a National Disaster is now a PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS for god's sake.

If these "rescuers" were smart they would have put every single person that managed to escape in quarantene for several weeks. They do not know why lies in the waters of the bayou! Plenty of ugly rats (known to spread the plague), snakes, etc.!

Scared? Damn right I am scared! :scared:

24. Maybe that's why they've held up relocations to other areas.
I'm not excusing an ounce of the government's response. But perhaps they've been advised to make sure they are not sending Cholera out into other areas by relocating evacuees out of the major shelters right now. Perhaps they want to do some sort of medical screeing or immunizations, first.
