Martin Savidge, Carl Quintanilla and Brian Williams from NBC;
Shep Smith from Fox (can't believe I'm writing that);
Anderson Cooper from CNN (and kudos to Jack Cafferty editoralizing from CNN--Aaron Brown has been firing away too), as well as the O'Brien's, Miles & Soledad, who have been firing away with both barrels at every official they could get their hands on, demanding answers and not getting any; and of course, Keith Olbermann from MSNBC has been asking questions too. As despicable as I usually find Tucker Carlson & Joe Scarborough even they were firing away and asking questions about the government response. In all, I think the media have had their finest week in years this past week while our government and the people of this country have had their worst.

At least to me. Her report of the screaming and cries in the dark put the human element into play.

30. Jean Meserve's on the ground reporting on Monday was one of the first

that I'm aware of to really break through the national anchordesks' "NOLA dodged a bullet" assessments.

Monday afternoon after the storm passed she phoned in a report to CNN on flooded neighborhoods that gave an indication of the magnitude of the impact on the area. She clearly was shaken by what she had seen and what she had to report. (Note: this flooding was before the 17th St Canal wall break began flooding the Orleans parish on Tuesday.) That same evening, on NewsNight with Aaron Brown she gave her astounding and heartbreaking report.

So while others also did a good job on the ground once they were there, Meserve's reporting on Monday for me stands out above all. She broke into the anchordesk happy talk and relief at NOLA's "near miss" with what would be the grim and terrible reality.

Net beats Feds in hurricane response

As floodwaters were leaching the life from New Orleans last Tuesday, President Bush delivered an impassioned speech calling for the continued occupation of Iraq.
"We will defeat the terrorists," Bush informed a crowd of World War II veterans. Then he played a guitar backstage with country singer Mark Wills.

Other federal agencies were equally oblivious. The Department of Homeland Security was sending out press releases that day about slapping Americans with passport requirements to travel to Canada, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, was announcing "disaster preparedness" seminars at a Home Depot in Florida scheduled for the next day.

But bloggers were paying attention to the actual catastrophe. By 12:40 p.m. PDT Tuesday, Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit.com was already reporting on what would become the Great Flood of 2005.

It was the Internet, ham radio networks and other forums that let individuals spontaneously join together in the last week to help flood victims.
By the end of the day, an online aid network was forming. Craigslist.org's lost and found forum for New Orleans was adopted to find missing people, a "Katrina Help" Wiki had launched, and other ad hoc forums emerged.

Bloggers were not alone. Ham radio operators quickly organized and began to pass along messages from stranded flood victims. One led to the rescue of 81-year-old Helen Elzy who was stuck on a roof in New Orleans, according to the American Radio Relay League. Many others were rescued thanks to ham radio operators' rapid response, which by Wednesday even included a speedily created database of volunteers.>>>>snip

31. Carl Quintanilla and others at NBC have truly been excellent.

I don't have cable, so I can't judge a lot of the candidates, but last week, the NBC news coverage was absolutely excellent, in my humble opinion. One of the most moving pieces was the segment where the children were speaking of their experiences in this disaster. I watched last night, and it seemed that NBC had gone back to its Bush-touting ways a little, but nothing can ever make me forget the things I saw and heard of NBC's coverage last week.

And Ted Koppel has of course been wonderful, as (almost) always.

33. Internationally...

BBC London News (the "real" BBC from London, not BBC International) has been rather ruthless as well. Every word simply oozes/implies that Bush is the biggest loser the world has ever seen. They don't even come out and really say it; it's literally dripping off their every word.

Also, being from Canada and being able to view everything the US does, I agree with all on this thread. And CNN has become my network of choice. (Never thought I'd EVER say that!!!)
