Where public opinion goes on Katrina will depend on mainstream media. Once again, as in Iraq war, 2004 election, Swift boats, and any other policy area you wish to name, the media will decide how public opinion is shaped OVER THE LONG RUN.
A year from now, what Katrina events will be remembered and what will be forgotten? What issues will be the hot topics in the nation? Who will ask the tough questions? Who writes the talking points?
There will be investigations. However we KNOW that investigations can be controlled and damage minimized...unless they are criminal and the rare independent prosecutor is involved (Plame).
So...do we get the media we saw last week -- independent and straightforward? Or do we get the media we saw during the previous 5 years?
