Anyone else turning into a big Nagin fan?
Quite honestly, I don't know the particulars of his politics, but he sure as hell is acting exactly as I'd want my leader to act. I want fire and brimstone and unprepared statements in times of tragedy. Quite frankly, as long as he's a fairly solid Democrat otherwise, I'd be willing to support this man for pretty much any position he wants right now.

4. I just don't know..
.. what to think of Nagin.

I can't tell whether he's Republican or not? Sometimes he speaks out the way he should, but other times he softpedals.

He is a hottie.. but so what?

Sue

6. I'm sick of hearing about how great Guiliani was...
...and how that is missing in NO. Bull crap! Nagin has been a constant presence, no different than Rudy.

14. Do you have links or transcripts for those?
People need to hear his reports that he gave throughout the storm.

He did everything he possibly could to get NO help and to do right for his people.

For BushCo to slime him and swift boat him is beyond disgusting.

10. His politics suck but he rocks anyway
Sorry, Rudy, you've just been term-limited as "America's Mayor".

As to Nagin, in his days as a cable TV executive, he actually gave money to King Dumbass**, most likely as part of corporate "bundling"; I'll bet he wishes he had that back!

Then he endorsed repuke Bobby Jindal, who now holds Bob Livingston's old seat (oh if only Livingston were Speaker now instead of that cockroach Denny Hastert!), over Blanco for Governor. What was he thinking?

But then again, Hillary herself was once a "Goldwater Girl", so maybe there's hope. Nothing like being stepped on and treated like dirt by the repukes to make you reevaluate your position.

17. a poster at "slate"

As recently as the year 2000, New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin was a millionaire, Bush-donating cable executive. Are we now required to pretend that he's somehow God's vicar on earth?

Our newest hero can do no wrong—because we have to trash Bush alone, and pretend that all who oppose him are martyrs. From Frank Donze, New Orleans Times Picayune:

DONZE (3/3/02): Since taking over the company, now known as Cox Communications of Louisiana, in 1989, Nagin has helped boost profits, expand the customer base and improve employee retention, a measure of work force morale. And the company has almost a decade to go on a 15-year franchise extension, a political victory that it won from the City Council in 1995.
As mayor, Nagin, a millionaire, will take a steep pay cut. His income tax returns from the years 1997 to 1999 indicated he averaged nearly $400,000 in salary and bonuses annually. As mayor, he will be paid $110,000.

In 2000, Nagin gave $1000 to Bush—and nothing, zero, to Bush's opponent. As progressives, must we pretend that this far-seeing man had a brilliant disaster plan? Would we have to stage such a silly charade if he had given money to Gore?

16. Add me to his fan list
I watched the local streaming constantly from the Saturday before the hurricane hit to late last week and was very impressed with him. There is NO question of his passion to do everything to save his citizens, imo.

18. I'd heard some guardedly positive things about Nagin
from friends and relatives who live in N.O. and area before Katrina. All of them have SOLIDLY supported him and his statements through this tragedy. If you had been watching the live WWL web stream from N.O. for the last week you would have NO doubt about Nagin, or how hard he has been strugling to get help and support for his city. He has been in tears repeatedly pleading for supplies, for help evacuating his citizens, for some contact with FEMA or someone with authority to utilize federal resources.

20. I like the fact that he keeps it real.
Some people insinuated that he's been putting on a show. But if anyone listened to that interview with Garland, the way they BOTH broke down at the end, they would know Ray was being nothing but honest. The way he broke off and said, "I gotta go..." He was hurting. He cares. And anyone who thinks otherwise is plain wrong.

And yes, he is a beautiful man inside and out.

It wasn't hard to tell the level of heartbreak he felt seeing his city destroyed. I'd support him with my last breath.

24. He's a little too "street" for me.
I prefer politicians with a more classic demeanor, I guess. I recoil a bit when he uses words likie "frikkin'."
