Presuming that we take back the House next year and * is impeached and the trial in the Senate returns "remove from office" and that both * and Crashcart are impeached and removed. Then the Speaker of the House, most likely Nancy Pelosi would take over as President. She then can appoint a VEEP. (How about Big Dawg?)

19. actually, it depends on the timing

if cheney is removed first, then shrub would appoint a replacement, to be confirmed by the senate. this replacement would then become president once bush was removed. this is essentially the scenario by which ford became president after agnew and then nixon resigned.

if bush is removed first, then cheney immediately becomes president. the office of the vice-president then being vacant, cheney appoints his own successor as veep, who, again, becomes president when cheney is removed.

if both are removed simultaneously, or at least, before a replacement under either of the above scenarios can be named, then hastert becomes president, and he then gets to nominate his veep.


finally, if a president nominates a veep due to a vacancy, and the president is then removed from office before that veep nominee is confirmed by the senate, then we have a bit of a constitutional mess on our hands. presumably, hastert would become president and could withdraw the veep nominee if so desired. most likely, though, the senate would do things in the "known" order, assuming they are the ones controlling the timing.
