1. I believe it's closer to correct to say there are 500 officers missing

at this time, rather than 500 quit.

It was reported that two killed themselves (one due to returning home and finding his family dead) and many were to report the Monday morning after Katrina they never made it in to work. Some are assumed to be dead from the hurricane others may have evacuated.

For the media to say they quit implies it was all voluntary, I'm sure the ones who died in hurricane Katrina would dispute that if they could.
