In the past two years, the Army Corp of Engineers requested $33.5 million dollars to repair and upgrade flood defenses in NOLA. Bush requested $6.9MM of that, but Congress saw fit to up *'s request to $11.2MM...which was roughly a THIRD of the ACE's request:
2004:
Army Corps request: $11 million Bush request: $3 million Approved by Congress: $5.5 million
a $5.5 million cut
2005:
Army Corps request: $22.5 million Bush request: $3.9 million Approved by Congress: $5.7 million
a $16.8 million cut
And *'s request for '06? An embarrassing $2.9 million.
That penny-wise decision has NOW led * to call for $50bn in relief.
Amazing! *'s shortsightedness has led to a 2272-time INCREASE in the amount of money he'll now spend to fix NOLA, and that's the first round of spending. Human life and loss aren't even computed into that.
An ounce of prevention, as they say.
I wonder what additional NOLA disasters are lurking in the 05-06 budget?
