Another levee question

The big 600 foot levee break happened on something called the 17th Street Canal, right? I saw the long shot from the helicopter that shows the canal coming out of Lake Ponchatrain.

Could this not have been blocked at the canal's entrance to the lake relatively easily? Of course, I'm hyptohetically assuming there's a federal government presence with helicopters and heavy gear and whatnot. The canal water would still flood the city, but not anywhere close to the degree that it was flooded by the neverending supply of the lake.

Is this something that would have been reasonable and feasible to consider?

PS: Apologies to Scott McClellan for playing the blame game while the president wants to focus on the important tasks at hand.

1. The Mississippi River

would have flooded the town if they did what you suggest. The 17th St. Canal connects the lake and the river.
