Most of the 2,800 Louisiana National Guard soldiers who are returning home early from their Iraq mission intend to join in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, their commander said Monday.

“The people of Louisiana have been worrying about us these past 12 months; now we are worried about them,” said Brig. Gen. John Basilica Jr., commander of the 256th Brigade Combat Team of the Louisiana National Guard.

The brigade has been in Iraq since last fall. They were due to return to Louisiana in September and October...

Three days ago, one American soldier went into hysterics upon hearing of the death of the three members of his family in New Orleans.

Matters escalated when an officer tried, by force, to calm Lancer down. Lancer was then joined by other soldiers who started to beat the officer. The fighting escalated when other officers tried to intervene in the melee and the soldiers began attacking and hitting them with their riffle butts. This included the beating of Iraqi senior army officers who attempted to help the American officers.
The soldiers were shouting:"You scoundrels. We will throw you out to the Resistance to kill you. It is because of you that we are getting killed here".
At one point, one of the soldiers radioed other fellow soldiers, who were out on patrols, to stop their mission and to return quickly to join them."

46. I wouldn't discredit it on this basis alone--the odd language. You have

an Arab guy (or guys) as witness (if the story is true) trying to understand what English-speakers are saying in the midst of a fight, reporting it to news person in Arabic, probably, then the thing getting translated back into English. Proper idiom could eaily be lost.

But it sounds more like just a melee--anger, flaring tempers, maybe a weak or disliked commander, things getting out of control. Punches flying. Somebody going too far. It sounds less like a mutiny than like a brawl--with grief about family losses at its core.

I've no doubt there is anger and rage at Bush and Rumsfeld--for the whole Iraq war, for stop-loss, for repeated tours of duty, for cuts to veterans, for misuse of the Nat'l Guard and the military, and add to this their murderous neglect (probably with thieving motives) in Louisiana, a whole city gone, thousands dead, many unnecessarily...

There are probably lots of incidents like this, as well as outright mutinies, that we never hear about. It's hard to imagine the hell these soldiers must be suffering.
