if people were going to be outraged enought to demand his resignation or impeachment, it would have happened by now . . . and it hasn't . . . sure, there are isolated demands from places like DU, but by and large the American population and the media have not demanded that Bush be removed . . . and they should have . . .

imagine, if you will, that all of the faces we've seen on television over the past week had been white . . . the calls for impeachment would have been instantaneous and damn near universal . . . the fact that they are black apparently means that they aren't important enough to raise too much of a stink about . . . yeah, it's a tragedy . . . but "we" will pull through . . . "we" meaning us whites as opposed to the people actually impacted . . .

if people are not outraged enough by now, they never will be . . . particularly now that BushCo will have plenty of time to mount their defense propaganda campaign . . . after the "impartial" investigation, we'll be told that Bush's people let him down . . . that he, too, is a victim of this tragedy . . . and the American people will get this somber look, nod their heads, and drive their SUVs to Wal-Mart the next day . . .

on edit: the fact that the truly outraged in the media and in government are calling for Brown's and Chertoff's heads -- and NOT Bush's -- proves the point . . .

4. The realistic goal

is not Bush impeachment or resignation, but rather success in the 2006 midterm elections and state & local elections. That's why we can't give up on this and the other failures of the Bush regime. It's all about gaining ground. We won't, unfortunately, get the vermin out of there in one fell swoop, but this can be a significant turning point if Democrats and progressives have the will and discipline to follow up with constructive plans, not just hot air.

America today - as Garrison Keillor said in his latest Salon.com article, this is a different America today, one that doesn't care if government incompetence means lost lives.

When will it end? I've got outrage fatigue setting in already. A large chunk of the population still approve of his administration? The past few years have been a grim Kafkaesque nightmare to which I wake up every day.

What will it take? What will it goddam take to bring a majority of the people back to their senses, and make them see the utter malevolence and evilness of this regime?
