Yahoo accused of helping China convict journalist
By Financial Times reporters

A media watchdog accused Yahoo of helping China convict a mainland journalist, highlighting questions about the will of internet companies to assist state repression in order to protect their investments in the country.

The accusation, which hinges on evidence that the internet portal allowed Chinese authorities to trace emails sent from the journalist’s personal Yahoo account back to his computer, follows last month’s investment by the US company of more than $1bn in the Chinese market.

The paper also says that a media watchdog has accused Yahoo of helping China to convict a journalist. The accusation, made by Reporters Without Borders, hinges on evidence that Yahoo allowed Chinese authorities to trace e-mails sent from journalist Shi Tao's personal Yahoo account back to his computer. Shi Tao, a reporter for Contemporary Business News, was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison in April for sending foreigners an e-mail that Chinese authorities alleged contained state secrets.
