We all know that the original question has the possibility of being taken like "we're better than them dirty n*ggers," and that there will be a flame war, and blah, blah, blah. This thread should be locked, IMHO, but only because it's going nowhere.

It's a valid question though, and one that I thought about myself. After lots and lots of thinking, the answer came to me: it's not because they're BLACK, it's partially because they're poor (and yes, poor people, because of depression, drug addiction, etc., often live in squalor -- three years of social service work taught me that), and partially because they're poor AND they're human. There were many people in there that couldn't take good care of themselves -- old people, mentally unstable people, people running out of meds, people who'd brought nothing. And, yes, the toilet paper most definitely would have run out -- weren't there like 20,000 people, or something -- can you FUCKING IMAGINE???

It's an interesting question, because it highlights societal breakdown -- and what happens -- and posters don't have to jump all over the person asking with knee-jerk identity politicking. What would make someone do that? At what point would you or I do that? Not only the shit smearing, but if it were a bunch of black, white or hispanic middle class people, would there have been so many rapes and "thugging?" I don't even know if any of this is true, but they're all interesting questions to ask, psychologically. It's not racist to say that a bunch of poor people might have trouble organizing, to the extent that some people with -- I don't know -- more societal acquity -- might have. The entire liberal program rests on the idea that some people are "more efficiently socialized" than others, and therefore, some others need help from the rest of society. I don't know why either the question or the answer, even if not pretty, would be a bombshell.

I'm hesitant to invoke the "this is not the time," shut-down-all-discourse decree, because I see Republicans do it, all the time. Though it is an interesting question, however, this might not be the right place to ask it. Try a psychology forum.

because I think the answer is obvious -- and yes, I can see wiping it on the walls as a definite solution to no toilet paper. Though, I haven't seen anyone properly refute the "paper everwhere," argument.

The "scatological question," for me, isn't as important as some of the other questions: the rapes, the apparent roving packs of thugs (and, like I said, I'm not sure if this happened or not, with all the rumors). And yes, I do believe these people were herded like animals and left in DISMAL conditions. That said, as far as social experimentation goes, I think the conditions may have been slightly different, given a different population of people. It's sad, and it's disturbing, and I don't attach a different outcome with value (good/bad), whatsoever.

The "shit" may even be secondary to other problems -- why couldn't people shit outside? Or everyone shit in the corner of the restroom? People were getting raped/attacked, in the restrooms, no? Would this have been a factor, with another sample of people? I'm not sure of the answer to those questions, but I'm not afraid to ask them, or think about them. The answer may be that we would have all acted the same. Either way, to question isn't to assign a value judgment.

one to eat (using the clean hand) without catching or spreading disease.

There again, from your previous posts, maybe you haven't any interest
in seeing other people's life experiences after all.

If I was ever in such a nightmare of a situation, I would be prepared
to do the same thing: use one hand to clean myself as best as I could
and then ensure that the unclean hand did not come into contact with
any food, drink or people.
